A recent Florida State University study states that employees don’t quit their company, they leave their boss. You already knew that, didn’t you?
But instead of letting your boss drive you away from your career, why not learn how to deal with him or her? Read on to find out how to cool the conflict.
SET BOUNDARIES Your boss is a slave driver. You don’t have to go mad; just tell him that you are overworked. Say this, ‘You have asked me to do A, B and C. I don’t have the time to complete everything by your deadline. Can you tell me what is most important so I can prioritise?’
BE INNITIATIVE Your boss could always be missing in action or doesn’t know (or care) what he is doing (or you). If he is too pre-occupied with his career, tell him so. Ask him to sit down to a weekly or monthly meeting so that you can start getting more regular direction. This way, he can’t accuse you of not playing your part (after all, who’s the one slacking, eh?
BE STRONG Your boss may make your life a living hell. What changes things is whether you are going to take it like a bitter pill, or take it and shove it back in his face. A mean boss often feels threatened by you, or could just be naturally mean. But that doesn’t mean he can get away with it. If your boss has gone overboard, confront him and say something like, ‘What you said about my performance in front of my colleagues really undermined my ability. I would appreciate it if you could get me that sort of feedback in private in the future.’
