Tired eyes, aching body, exhausted brain – we have 10 challenges up our sleeves to help you unwind after work!
The average working Malaysians do not come home until around 7pm at night. The sun is setting, the day is almost over – and you are whining over the fact that it is only Tuesday, which means there are still so many days to the week. Most of our after-work exhaustion is caused by the time we spend staring at the screen, with very minimum movements throughout the long 9 hours or so. Think about it: when do you actually move? Only during the drive to and from work? And then lunchtime? And sometimes over meetings with clients?
Elin E. Bak from the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences revealed that prolonged sitting is the enemy of your body – for it is associated with obesity, abnormal glucose metabolism, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease risk and cancer. Recently, we also reported about the connection between prolonged sitting and diabetes in women. So it’s time to forget about work at least a couple of hours a day! We know it feels like the company needs you 24/7, but really – they need a healthy you with sound body & soul even more. Brace yourself, for you are going to be challenged to stay away from computer for at least 2 hours after work every day now!
Challenge #1: LOL!
Remember Patch Adam’s laughter therapy back in the 90s? Now, Malaysians know laughter yoga (hasyayoga) as a certified method to gain health benefits from laughing. Laughter truly is the best medicine, so we challenge you to crack yourself up without funny Youtube videos or 9gag! Involve your friends, family members, or just the things around you to unwind and get some laughs after a tensed working day.
Challenge #2: Auto-massage
Not every day you can be spoiled by a great masseuse or a loving partner’s gentle massages – so why not give yourself a massage? You will be surprised of how massaging your stiff shoulders and tired eyes for 10 minutes could make you feel better. For the eyes, close the lids and start making gentle round movements with your index fingers until you feel the muscles around your eyes are less tensed.
Challenge #3: Go on a date!
With him, a girl friend, or yourself! Prepare an extra set of clothes from home and get changed to excite you a little. Have some good food, a couple of drinks, a good conversation (yes, having dialogues with yourself is good! think: writing brilliant ideas out) and come home feeling fulfilled. We social creatures need some outings to sweep away the tiredness.
Challenge #4: Quality time with the furkids
If your neighbourhood is safe and well lit up, why not bring the dogs for a walk after dinner. You are refreshed, and the furkids get what they deserve. Playing with pets is de-stressing, and definitely a good distraction from the PC and iPad and smartphone. If you don’t have any pets, have you ever thought of adopting one? You love animals, you have a decent place – you should definitely consider being a mother.
Challenge #5: Cook a quick dinner
Oprah has some tantalizing quick dinner recipes in her website, or if you’re up for something more local – head over to Rasa Malaysia for easy Asian dinners. Get yourself busy, for it helps you to stop thinking about work. Remind yourself of how rewarding it is to savour the meal you created from scratch.
Challenge #6: Plan your outfits
Take time to play dress up and quit cursing in the morning from being late to work and have nothing to wear. Indulge on simple, girly fun like the old days when we played with paper dolls.
Challenge #7: Shake your bootie!
Do not skip your gym schedule. It is a good ‘revenge’ to run on the cardio and not think about anything. If you are a homey person, you can still sweat it out – just dance to your favourite tunes and feel positive again!
Challenge #8: Explore the city
We all know how gorgeous the city lights are once the rush hour jam is over. Drive away and visit some new spots in town. Most KL-ites get too busy that they forget about seeing the city with tourists’ eyes. Have you tried the KLCC-Pavilion bridge? If you haven’t, why not try it later after work?
Challenge #9: DIY aromatherapy
Nearing your bedtime, lit up some candles, burn some fragrant incents, and lie down on the sofa with the eyepatch on. The eyepatch will both help you to stay away from any gadgets and indulge in the darkness. Set your alarm for 30 minutes later and have a hot shower afterwards.
Challenge #10: Cheat away!
You always lead a healthy lifestyle, follow a complicated beauty regime, and exercise to keep yourself young and fit. One day every week, you are entitled to have a Cheat Day! Have some ice cream, cry over a movie, or skip a social event you dread going to. Spoil the little girl in you and wake up happier the next morning!
So ladies, are you ready to ditch the gadgets for 2 hours a day?
