5 Casual Dating Spots in Klang Valley

Wanted: casual dating spots with good food but not overly hip it aches – in Klang Valley.

Regardless of age, the first date – or the first few dates – are bound to make the heart beats faster. Popping the right question (inviting without being pretentious), choosing the right outfit, the right time – and most important of all: the right place. People judge, and that’s just the way human rolls – your chosen venue affects the overall judgement of you as a date. To bear with the awkward silences – we have picked five casual dating spots in the Klang Valley that are refreshingly stylish, without trying too hard to be what they are not.

1. Wondermama

If there was a nyonya equivalent to Ben’s General Food Store and its canteen-like atmosphere, it would be Wondermama. Also located at Bangsar Village I next to Plan B, the newest addition to the crowd’s favourite hangout place offers an array of local food with a twist. Think soft shell crab nasi lemak branded as Nasi Lemak 2.0S (RM23.90) and durian pancake served in an old school tin cup with sprinkles of almond (RM6.90). After the rather greasy meal, down a glass of pomelo ice tea (RM4.90). On top of that, they also serve pizzas and other European favourites.

From the familiar kuih muih to antique Malaysian decor, Wondermama is pleasant without being intimidating – making it a perfect spot for a casual first date. Should you need a private heart-to-heart spot, head upstairs to Wondercafe, where a glass room is made available, best accompanied by a cuppa; or BYO wine, if you must.

For those who anticipates awkward silences on the first date, head over to Acme Bar & Coffee (ABC) for the bustling surroundings and stylish ambience. Don’t forget to make a reservation because full house is a norm for ABC. Dubbed one of the best cafes in KL for their top notch food, the eatery boasts extraordinary menu including Grilled Bacon Wrapped Snails (RM19) and ABC Wagyu Burger (RM69). The new go-to spot looks and tastes impressive without forgetting to pay homage to our Malaysian root – as seen on Sambal Hebi Aglio Olio Spaghetti (RM29) and Cempedak Cake (RM15). The best thing about a dating spot with great coffee and teas? The fact that you have all the more reasons to elongate your dating duration, of course.

With the ramen fad hovering over the city, it should not be that hard to get a ‘yes!’ from a (good) ramen date invitation. Yamagoya Ramen at Publika, Solaris Dutamas has opened for a mere three months, and boasts their authenticity for having the pork bones flown in directly from Japan. A fun fact to tell your date, this is the first overseas branch of Yamagoya Ramen after more than 140 outlets all over Japan. Some of the recommended Kyushu-style ramen choices are Black Garlic Ramen (RM22) and Char Siew Ramen (24).

4. MyBurgerLab

If Tyra Banks were to comment on MyBurgerLab, she would say it is a dating spot for those who are ‘fiercely real’. If you are so over the idea of a prim & proper first date – head over to the current most talked-about burger spot in town and get your teeth blackened by their bamboo charcoal buns.

Run by three lads who aspire to provide quality burger with affordable prices – it is not hard to see why A+ (RM15) and Bella Luna (RM14) will make you cry tears of joy. The patties are freshly grounded from Australian beef on a daily basis, the portobella mushrooms are huge and juicy…and don’t even get us started on the Cajun fries. With an addition of RM5 you get the Awesome Fries and bottomless soft drink combo together. Come in no later than 7pm, for their burgers get sold out within 3-4 hours after their opening time (5pm).

If he/she is the ‘breakfast menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner’ type, you will gain 100 brownie points by bringing him/her to The Red Bean Bag (RBB). Founded by two siblings who are inspired by the Melbourne cafe culture, the warm cafe would instantly whet your appetite with its ever-so-good smell. Try the RBB’s Signature Breakfast (RM19.90) with your usual breakfast suspects – poached/scrambled eggs, sauteed mushroom and beef bacon; the egg is done to perfection it could turn an egg cynic into an egg lover. The Eggs Benedict (RM15.90) does not disappoint as well – best accompanied with the fragrant Australian Rubra tea. The RBB has started serving dinner menu – a perfect chance to ask your date for a second date if all is well.
