Vogue Italia has kickstarted 2013 with a bang by putting an Asian woman on its cover for the first time ever!
The beautiful Sun Fei Fei, a Chinese model, is featured in the January issue of Vogue Italia which celebrates the multicultural, border-free facets of fashion.
The honour went to Sun thanks to Editor in chief Franca Sozzani, who works as a Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations ‘Fashion 4 Development Project.
In a WWD interview with Sozzani, she says that her team selected a series of archival images by important photographers to highlight how fashion has always featured multiethnic and multicultural elements.
“In this world, beauty is king and it’s something that brings people together with no national and racial limits,” she says.
“In the images, Fei Fei perfectly embodies a timeless idea of an extremely chic, beautiful woman.”
The cover which was shot by Steven Meisel, pays an homage to the exotic and sophisticated allure of China Machado, the fusion icon of the Fifties, where a story of elegance and refinement is recounted.
The magazine which is known for having taken a stand against anorexia and promoting the use of black models in fashion, follows the footsteps of French Vogue which has its first Asian model on its cover in 2011. Both US and UK versions have not had an Asian on the cover yet.
