We spoke to James Molloy, M.A.C’s Director of Makeup Artistry last week who showed us what trends were hot on the runway for Spring/Summer 2013.
James with models dressed in Khoon Hooi. Model on the left has Sci-Chedelic makeup on, and on the right it’s the Sig-Nature trend.
There are four looks to master this season and we’ve broken this down in to two parts for easy consumption
In Part 1, we dissect Sig-Nature and Sci-Chedelic, and in Part 2, we take a look at Puri-Tan and Nu-Ance.
Trend 1: Sig-Nature
Sig-Nature is all about the celebration of pure, healthy-looking skin like an English Rose – a stain on the cheeks, and a stain on the lips. Think ‘mannequin eggshell finish’ (Andrew Gallimore), and super polished skin – so ‘highly reflective with a marble-like, alabaster quality’ (Luca Pica).
The look could be seen on the runways of Blumarine, J.W. Anderson, Margaret Howell, Prabal Gurung, Tommy Hilfiger, and Tory Burch.
“It’s a very fresh looking face – imagine a girl who’s just had a facial and her cheeks are glowing, her skin looks really healthy and radiant. I think what’s really interesting about this look is having that slightly filled out, boyish brow.” says James.
“A very bare face with a handsome brow kind of brings everything together and she looks a little bit more expensive.”
The Essentials: Mineralize Moisture SPF 15 Foundation, Dirty Blonde Fluidline Brow Gelcreme, Golden Elixir Strobe Cream, Mineralize Foundation/Loose, Posh Tone Mineralize Rich Lipstick, Face and Body Lotion. Some products are from the upcoming Spring/Summer 2013 collection.
Trend 2: Sci-Chedelic
Sci-Chedelic is minimalist, reductionist, and singular. We love the graphic statement which gets a 60′s spin – making it punk yet chic at the same time. Think free-spirited and avant-garde!
This trend could be seen on the runways of Vivienne Westwood, Missoni, Moschino, Jean-Pierre Braganza, Mugler, and ThreeAsFour.
“We saw a lot of references to the 60s, to The Beatles, to Psychedelia. This trend is really about expressing yourself through colour, having fun, being a bit free-spirited, and enjoying either a bold eye or a bold lip statement,” explained James.
“..(On the model) we played around with something soft and metallic over the eyelids (Old Gold pigment on the model), and a pop colour on the lips and we’ve gone with a really hot orange. Skin is perfected but nothing too much going on, so it’s either a lip focus or an eye focus.”
“For both of the looks, I’ve used MAC’s Master foundation which is our brand new foundation. It’s really a breakthrough in technology in the way that it let’s your natural skintone shine through but still gives you a perfect base. It’s perfect for the humidity as well as it dries to a natural matte finish. So I find that it’s really long-wearing and it’s not too heavy a coverage.”
The Essentials: MAC Pro Chromographic Pencil in Process Magenta, MAC Pro Acrylic Paint in Yellow, Cyan and Process Magenta, Electric Red Pigment, Auto-de-Bleu Technakohl Liner, Embrace Me Lip Pencil. Some products are from the upcoming Spring/Summer 2013 collection.
