How to: Dress Properly To Work

Whether you are the financial planner or the lady editor – we show you the right things to wear!

‘Dress to impress’ will never go cliche. At least not in the working place – since you have to maintain a presentable image on your colleagues’ and clients’ eyes. Malaysian Defence Ministry recently posted a staff dress code guide but triggered online jokes to its backfire. Typical dress code guides only touch on formal dressing rules, where in fact there are rising industries that could suffer from under-dressing or overdressing from the lack of relevant guides.

Venusbuzz show you what essentials you need to have and to OWN your field – regardless what industry you are in!

1. Professional Dress

This is the most conventional ‘working attire’. Some of us may have to wear it all the time, some others only occasionally. Whichever describes you best, it is essentials for you to own a formal jacket. Invest on a timeless yet chic one to last you a long time.

For those in the creative industry, format jacket equals statement jacket. You need to own a basic jacket with a bold accent to make you stand out in the crowd. Opt for a simple cut, with bright colors or prints.

Another essential to own is slacks. Choose the non-leg-hugging ones to make yourself look presentable. If you are tall, opt for wide-legged pants to be paired with pumps. Effortless chic in a second!

2. Smart Casual

As the name suggests, this way of dressing is a compromise between strictly formal and casual wear. To dress smartly casual – the rule is to change or dismiss an item from an otherwise formal look, with a more laid-back item. For example, when you have shirt and pants on, you do not need a blazer. Optionally, you change the blazer into sweater or cardigan.

Shirts, closed-toe shoes, and dresses/skirts with decent lengths are the essentials of smart casual dressing – no matter what fields you serve for.

Where to get them:

Bias ruffled front skirt, RM149, Azorias

Lipstick red mandarin pencil skirt dress, RM63, Whitesoot

Contrast floral lace print (mustard), RM129, Azorias

3. Campus Casual

Take a stroll down the campus memory lane, and apply your dress code rules then to your present self. With maturity and fierceness added, of course!

Some industries like the media industry (ie. Venusbuzz) do not really require formal dressing, and there are times formal industries hold casual meetings and gatherings. Do not panic if you are so used to the formal way of dressing! The essentials are easy breezy: jeans and t-shirts. You have a lot of room to spice things up – for instance, crochet collars on your top, artsy geometrical prints on your tops, leggings, or colored jeans.

Where to get them:

Combined printed t-shirt, RM99.90, ZARA Malaysia

High-neck crochet babydoll blouse, RM149, Azorias

Now you don’t have to worry anymore about what is decent and impressive to wear to work depending on your respective fields. Last but definitely not the least tip: statement shoes!
