Rock star, philanthropist and supermom – is there anything that the legendary Cyndi Lauper can’t do?
Thanks to a new original series, Cyndi Lauper: Still So Unusual, we follow her along for a chaotic yet entertaining ride as she launches a Broadway musical, performs on NBC’s The Voice, works to raise funds for her True Colors charitable foundation and much more.
With Cyndi’s hectic schedule, her family life with husband of 20 years, actor David Thornton (My Sister’s Keeper, The Notebook), and their 14-year-old son, Declyn, play a role throughout the series as Cyndi struggles to split time between work and family and giving adequate attention to both – something that definitely most working moms can relate to!
In one episode where she’s trying to take the day off she says, “How many times do I have to sing Girls Just Want to Have Fun, only – we don’t have any!”
Despite all that, she still looks as youthful and edgy as ever, and VenusBuzz.com had this opportunity to ask Cyndi some questions in this exclusive e-mail interview to find out more about the new series, as well as some of her beauty and fashion tips!
CL: I always find time to breathe, take a walk, ride a bike, do yoga and play with my dog. They are the normal breaks anyone takes just to just relax. You need to do that to be able to work hard and also be there for your family. You need to stay mentally fit.
VB: You’ve always been a fashion/style/beauty icon to many – Any plans to come up with a new fashion line (because we’d be first in line!)?
CL: I would love to! I think about that a lot and hope to do that one day.
VB: What’s one of your favourite and worst looks of all time, and why?
CL: I don’t have one. Fashion is like an experiment – sometimes you get it right and if you get it wrong you learn from it and then the next time watch out!
VB: As someone who has done all sorts of awesome makeup and hair colours, what are some of your beauty tips?
CL: I have so many you would need a few hours. I love makeup and have since I was a kid. I love reading fashion magazines both current and really old ones to find inspiration, then I just copy what I see in magazines.
CL: My voice. I’m not talking about my singing voice, though. My speaking voice is strange.
VB: What’s your must-sing karaoke song? Which singer/musician/band are you listening to now?
CL: There is a lot of great music being made. I always find new bands I love, like the band Hunter Valentine who I brought out on tour with me. I love the new P!nk album – she’s one of my favorites. I love Jake Bugg.
VB: What can fans expect from ‘Still So Unusual’?
CL: You will meet my family, my business family and you will get a behind the scenes look at me doing what I do – being on TV, making music, writings songs and how I try to keep all these balls in the air at the same time and do my best work and still try and be there for my family. Sometimes I fail and sometimes I succeed, and you will see all of that the good and the bad.
VB: We’re sure you’ve had many, but what’s your proudest moment to date?
CL: The day my son was born. My son keeps me grounded. Being a parent is an awesome responsibility and keeps your feet firmly on the ground.
VB: Any plans to visit your Malaysian fans anytime soon?
CL: I hope to visit very soon.
