Oh, the horror! Bridget Jones fans, brace yourself!
In news that has shaken up many literary fans around the world, Bridget Jones’ Mark Darcy is dead! Author Helen Fielding has created a storm following revelation that she has killed off the beloved Mr Darcy character in her latest book from the saga.
Set 15 years after the last novel, we find the always unlucky-in-love Bridget married to Mark Darcy and have two children together but as fate would have it (or as willed by Fielding), she is back on the singles’ market again after the death of Darcy.
The revelation is based on the extracts of Fielding’s latest Bridget Jones’s Diary, Mad About The Boy that was published in the Sunday Times Magazine, which has caused such a furore among fans.
Fielding’s first book Bridget Jones’s Diary was published in 1996 and a sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason was released three years later. It follows the life of a 30-something single woman working in London. She struck a chord with many women who identified with the struggles of weight, work and love faced by the modern career woman.
The two novels sold 15 million copies worldwide and in 2001, Hollywood came knocking with its movie adaptation staring Renee Zellweger as Bridget and Colin Firth as the aloof Darcy.
In the latest book, Bridget Jones is now a 51-year-old widow, obsessing over a 29-year-old toyboy by the name of Roxter, five years after Darcy’s passing. No doubt this latest development has not been well-received by those rooting for our heroine!
Bridget Jones’s Diary, Mad About The Boy will be out on Oct 10th.
