What you shouldn’t do while in the gym

The gym is a social place, and since you’re surrounded by people, most of whom are strangers, you need to watch what you’re doing. Whether you’re a gym regular or newbie, there are unseen rules of conduct that you should be aware of and adhere to. Here are some prime examples of what NOT to do at the gym.

DON’T

1. Walk in front of someone facing the mirror

That floor-to-ceiling mirror isn’t for vanity. It’s there so people can check their posture and balance while they’re training.

2. Leave a sweat puddle

One word – gross. Be sure to wipe down equipment after each use with a paper towel and sanitizing spray.

3. Talk too much

Talking to someone who’s lifting weights or running on the treadmill can be dangerous. Also, if you need to talk on your cell phone, speak softly or go to a spot where you won’t disturb others.

4. Wear unwashed gym wear

No, not even if you’ve worn it just once. You may not smell it, but others can.

5. Sing

Who sang that song? Yeah, let’s keep it that way. The music on your iPod may be inspiring you to go faster and further, but keep your singing voice to yourself.

6. Grunt

You’re not Conan or Xena. Loud grunts can be alarming (it sounds like you’re dying) and others find it annoying and distracting.

7. Creep others out

If you’re a gym flirt, know when to step away when your advances are being turned down.

8. Stare

Don’t stare at someone, male or female, whether they’re grotesquely overweight or have a seriously hot bod. They know you’re looking.

9. Rest on the equipment

Someone might want to use it. Just because there’s no one standing next to you, it doesn’t mean no one wants to use the machine you’re on. Maybe others are killing time on another machine, waiting for you to get off.

10. Use the drinking fountain to

Spit, wash your face or clean your nose. Ugh!
