11 nominations for ‘Hugo’, 10 for ‘The Artist’, and the 17th nomination for Meryl Streep
Black and white, almost silent French movie ‘The Artist’ is indeed revolutionary. It is the first silent film to run for Best Picture in The Academy Awards in 83 years! The movie also bags 9 other nominations including Best Actor (Jean Dujardin), Best Supporting Actress (Berenice Bejo), and Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius).
Another walk down the memory lane by Martin Scorsese is grinning from a bag full of nominations – 11 no less! ‘Hugo’ is a movie about 1930s orphans in Paris. The movie is running by The Artist’s side on Best Picture, as well as giving Scorsese his 7th nomination in directing.
Stiff competition it is at the leading lady section, where Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady), Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn), and Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs) are nominated. This is the 17th nomination for Meryl Streep and the 6th for Glenn Close. Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), 26, is the youngest nominee this year who is going against the veteran actresses on Best Actress category with her first-ever nomination.
George Clooney (The Descendants) and Brad Pitt (Moneyball) are listed in the Best Actor category, against Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) who in spite being a veteran, is a first-timer on the category.
