Malaysia is now globally recognized as a travel destination. Datuk Seri Ng Yen Yen, Tourism Ministry, announced that tourism is now the fifth largest contributor to the country’s revenue.

World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) puts Malaysia on the 9th spot of the world’s top tourist destinations in 2009, measured from the number of tourists visiting the country.

Malaysia is a recommendable affordable holiday destination – with a wide array of budget flights and hotels. Lonely Planet recognizes the country as one of the ten countries tourists should visit. Furthermore, the country is seen as a ‘complete package’ destination, offering tourists rainforest, prserved beaches, as well as cultural heritage sites.

“From a mere 5.5 million tourist arrivals in 1998, contributing some RM8.5 billion ($2.7 billion) in tourism receipts, Malaysia successfully attracted 23.65 million tourists in 2009.” RentNow Malaysia

It seems like the global economic downfall is a blessing in disguise in Malaysia which provides just what the world citizens need – value for money holiday destinations.

The government sets a high bar for themselves with RM115 billion targeted to be gained by the Malaysian tourism sector by 2015.
