If you think salads can’t fill you up, think again. The Salad Bar located in Uptown Damansara Utama, aims to promote healthy eating and to make vegetables tasty. Boy, are they both healthy and tasty!
We tried a selection of everything on their menu, starting with the soup of the day, the pumpkin soup. It was blended with fresh pumpkin made into creamy goodness yet light enough to enjoy. The secret is in substituting cream for milk in a blend that is not too watery.
Next came the salads. Over at The Salad Bar, you can mix and match your salads in what they call the 2-3-1 combo; you select 2 type of greens (from 5 options), 3 toppings (from 22 options) and 1 dressing (from 11 options). The other option is to go with the SuperSalads, a selection of 9 specially prepared concoctions with names such as The B.L.O.G, Squares & Rounds and Old Granny’s Caesar.
The B.L.O.G., with tofu chunks, dried apricots and the delectable oriental dressing was our favourite. The Squares & Rounds (pictured below) with grains like chickpeas, buckwheat & millets and tossed with homemade miso dressing was also very appealing to the health-conscious. For those who like their salads sweet, you have the option of the Fruity Nuthouse or Tropical Fruits.
Meat lovers, fret not. The Old Granny’s Caesar salad comes with slices of well marinated chicken which compliments a very light herb dressing, a twist to the usual cream-based ones served in most other places. If you want an extra serving of meat on any of the salads, you can just top up with herb chicken, spicy teriyaki or chicken sausage at only RM2.50.
Pricing is very reasonable, sets are available throughout the day and range from RM11.50 to RM16.50 and is a combo of a healthy juice or soup with a salad, sandwich or pasta, enough of a selection to keep your tummy happy.
The spicy chicken and chili mushroom pastas are tasty and the turkey ham wrap is a healthy and filling alternative for a light meal. The sandwiches were served with wholemeal bread (what a plus), even the wrap was wholemeal!
The juices are freshly squeezed and comes in healthy combos for detox, for the heart, to reduce cholesterol and etc. They also have smoothies blended with fresh yoghurt. For a healthy dessert, The Salad Bar serves plain yoghurt with fresh fruits and honey. This is highly recommended for those wanting to consume more superfoods.
What I love most about The Salad Bar is that they provide healthy substitutes for usually fattening ingredients such as mayonnaise for yoghurt, honey for sugar, milk for cream and etc.
For the healthy at heart or those intending to increase your vegetable intake without feeling like a cow led to green grass, drop by The Salad Bar. We give it two green thumbs up!
