All About Eyelashes: What’s Pretty, What’s Ugly

Boosting your lashes should be gorgeous instead of disastrous – we show you how to posses just the right eyelashes!

A superbly expressive colleague once told the office ladies of her friend who insisted on wearing lash-enhancing mascara to a water sport activity and it turned out hillariously disastrous. Syahrini, an Indonesian singer who regularly performs in Malaysia, calls her eyelashes ‘anti-Hurricane Katrina’ for she applies no less than 3 layers of fake lashes at all times!

Either we are so lovestruck by fabulous drag queen Shelah, or over-the-top eyelashes are just the current fad – we see lots and lots of dramatic eyelashes roaming around the streets. With all due respect, while some get ‘em dramatic lashes right, some are just.. jaw-dropping, in a not so positive light. While fashion-forward events would appreciate aesthetic falsies, typical casual or formal events call for less drama on the eyes.

Venusbuzz to the rescue! We tell you exactly what products to use and how to achieve wonderful and non-disastrous lashes!

Why bother with the falsies?

While some are blessed with long, curly lashes, some are born with short, sparse pairs. Mascaras are great if we can find the one with lengthening and thickening effect, does not smear, and is easy to remove. Reality strikes – mascaras are not as dramatic as we want them to be, most of the times. A wide array of falsies, on the other hand, could give you the doe-eyed effect, pin-up girl effect, or just the girl next door with beautiful lashes within minutes.

Why should falsies be scraped off our beauty must-haves?

If you are an expert in cutting falsies to the right length, by all means, go ahead and look gorgeous with them! But for those who aren’t, and opt to just stick the whole thing onto your eyes, well.. you should either learn to cut or forget falsies for good. The other complaint about falsies are they could fall off at times, for only glue sticks them to your lids. Imagine dancing in a party and when the lights are back on, your fake eyelashes are falling to your cheeks. Not exactly a pretty view to witness. In the long run, false eyelashes could be the cause of your eyelashes to fall, brittle, and bald.

How to use falsies to your benefits

1. Opt for individual lashes

They could usually classified according to their lengths: short, medium, and long. Short and medium are usually safe to use for they suit most ladies. Long ones are produced for more dramatic purposes. Use pinset and specific individual lashes glue (usually comes in tiny bottles. Suggested product: Duo) to safely apply them to the root of your lashes. Curl both natural and fake lashes to enable them to blend well.

2. Get your glue right

If you are using the normal falsies, be sure that your glue is specifically for your need. The glue usually comes in a tube.

3. Trim, trim, trim

Hold the falsies on your lash line (from the inside to outside corner of the eye) and trim it accordingly before application. Using cuticle scissors, trim your falsies to the desired length. Angle your scissors so they snip naturally, instead of straight up.

4. How to not tear with falsies on

Do not apply the falsies too close to your inside corner of the eyes. Be careful to not get the glue inside your eyes.

5. Eye makeup first, falsies second

Finish your eye makeup, including a thin layer of mascara on your natural lashes. Once the falsies take place, apply more mascara to keep the falsies in place.

What if I’m not into falsies but still desire lengthy lashes?

Some women complain about balding upper lashes from frequent usage of false eyelashes. Thanks to beauty innovations, there are   fantastic ways to lengthen your eyelashes without any help from the falsies.

1. Lash serum

This treatment grows your eyelashes by 50%, both upper and lower lashes, with regular usage for a certain period of time. One of my colleagues tried American Lash Booster obtained from NARA MediSpa at Bangsar Shopping Centre before her wedding day. We noticed her lasting natural long and curly eyelashes even without mascara on. The product comes in a mascara-style tube, and it is to be applied like a liquid eyeliner along your lash line, once a day. In 3 weeks time, you should get the desired lash length.
