Model or Role Model

Since the airing of the reality tv show, Beauty Camp, that went live on national television last year, Andrea Fonseka has been popularly known as the Malaysian Tyra Banks. Undoubtedly, the show was a hit amongst Malaysians, and Andrea took on the role of the mentor and judge. All eyes were on her.

This former Miss Malaysia is also actively engaged in social media, allowing her fans to participate in the events of her everyday life via her Facebook page where she is listed as a public figure. This brings up a debatable issue – where does one draw the line between personal life and public life. Also, is she a role model or just a model? If so, what is an acceptable role model behavior and has she crossed the line?

While we want our local beauties to be opinionated and be “beyond beauty”, are we also too critical when it comes to them being opinionated?

Should a public figure show us her true self, speak her mind and lead the way when it comes to change, while using social media to rally the change OR should such public figures be careful about what they say on public profiles which have an influence on people that follow her or look up to her?

If Andrea is not a public figure, would this be any different?
