Movie Review : Beauty and The Beast 3D

Tale as old as time, true as it can be. Disney brings us Beauty and the Beast in 3D. This movie is actually an introduction of the classic movie of 1991, now in 3D.

In true Disney fashion, the leading lady does sing along with the whole village and casts of characters, and yes, animals do also magically appear to perch themselves on the main characters.

Beauty and The Beast captures the journey of Belle (Beauty) who is taken prisoner by a hideous beast in his castle. The Beast is actually a prince who was cursed by a witch. The Beast could only transform back into human form if he learned to love others and have someone fall in love with him.

While remaining captive in the castle, Belle befriends the castle’s enchanted staff—a teapot (Mrs Potts) and her son, a tea cup (Chips), a candelabra (Lumiere) and a mantel clock (Cogsworth), and ultimately sees beneath the Beast’s exterior and manages to uncover the heart and soul of a prince. As expected, they fall in love.

Other key characters include the village “hunk”, Gaston, the guy that your mom warns you of and who thinks that he is God’s gift to women. He insist that Belle should be his wife, so when she turns him down and instead finds out that she has fallen for the beast, he mounts a search and destroy troop amongst the villagers to kill the beast.

In true dramatic Disney love story fashion (you’d think they took pages off Bollywood), he does kill the Beast, but Belle utters her love just in time to transform the Beast into the real prince that he is. It is funny, watching Disney movies, you can almost predict the next scene, yet that is how you want it to turn out! They are quite amazing movie makers.

The characters are all distinct and very lovable. Lumiere as a suave playboy candelabra is outstanding, he is smooth in mannerisms and words, being French. Cogsworth is your tight upper lip British head-of-household and is a tightly wound mantel clock who wants to run things like clockwork. They make a hilarious pairing.

This movie works really well in 3D and is worth paying for, you get the full effect of what 3D is meant to be. The songs are also memorable classics which make you want to sing-along. Overall, the movie is very entertaining and good for the whole family, young or old!

Beauty and The Beast opens in Malaysian cinemas from February 14 onwards, just in time for Valentine’s Day!
