Food for your Skin

Beauty is skin deep

Many of us fall prey to the advertising bluff of skincare products that claim to lighten your skin tone up to three tones fairer in seven days. It’s a wonder how even when it is plain to the eye that the results were given the Fotoshop makeover, we jump unabashedly headfirst into the marketing ploy. It’s true, we’re shallow like that.

Creams and lotion can make your skin healthier and more supple, but the real truth behind great looking skin goes deeper than that. So how deep does skin go? As far as your digestive system. It’s obvious isn’t it, that you are what you eat (cliché!)? We want it fast, and we want it easy – that’s why we opt for external skin food, instead of taking the long, but ultimately more effective, route of proper dieting.

If you want healthy skin, ditch your unhealthy lifestyle and start eating right!

Fish

You’ve heard of Omega-3 – fish is full of it. This essential fatty acid is one that the body cannot produce on its own, so we get it through the food we eat. A deficiency can cause rashes and scaly skin, although the latter is not common. Tuna, salmon and sardines are a great source of Omega-3, and will keep your skin soft and silky.

Berries

Berries are often touted as superfoods with high concentrations of nutrients and antioxidants. Berries are high in Vitamin C, which is essential in stimulating collagen production. To keep skin supple and smooth, it is good advice to include berries such as blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and acai berries in your diet.

Yoghurt

Low-fat yoghurt at that. Yoghurt has the active bacteria cultures that promote digestion, and all we’re talking about here is food. So if food isn’t digested properly, then it all goes to waste. Besides, yoghurt gives you a healthy immune system, kills of bacteria that causes eczema and acne, and gives you radiant skin. Yummy and good for your tummy, and skin.

Walnuts

Walnuts are associated with glowing skin, shiny hair, strong bones and vibrant eyes. Apparently, the fats they contain are even better for you than what is found in salmon. They also provide you with Vitamin E, which also acts as an antioxidant. They’re crunchy, too.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes get their red hue from lycopene, a carotenoid that may help to keep your skin smooth, also one of the best antioxidants. What’s even more amazing, is that it is better to consume processed tomatoes than raw ones, as the lycopene is absorbed easier into the system in the form of juices, sauces and the like.

Dark Chocolate

It’s good for your skin, honest! Dark chocolate is loaded with antioxidants and is associated with more hydrated skin and decreased sensitivity to sunlight, thus making your skin smoother and softer. Choose dark chocolate for wrinkle-free skin!

Water

Probably the most important item in your diet. Drinking enough water keeps your skin hydrated, which leads to younger-looking skin. Do we need to elaborate more?
