Colouring Your World

Colours are such an integral part of our lives, and even more so if we were to live with those colours everyday in our homes. Thinking of decorating your home? Learn how to make the best of your home with these cool and warm colours.

Cool Colours

Blue

Blue reminds of us of the sky and the sea, large expanses that symbolize freedom and space. However, going overboard with blue can make your home feel cold and uninviting. Painting your rooms with pale blue can give the impression of spaciousness but it is also good for putting people to sleep and putting people off food. Also great for places that need a subdued feel to it, like bathrooms. If you want your guests to stay in their rooms and eat less of your food, blue is for you.

Green

Our eyes are at ease with green, probably because it is almost everywhere. Green is a relaxing colour, one that calls for refreshing, peace and quiet. It can also be quite exciting as it is a combination of blue and the energetic yellow. Again, too much green can make for a depressing effect – think hospitals. Greens are versatile, but finding the right shade of green can be challenging. Definitely a popular colour, as everyone seems to be going green. Green is a good choice for hallways and bathrooms where you heed the call of nature.

Purple

Mystery and royalty abound with this colour. Purple combines the energy and creativity of red and the calmness that is blue. Deeper shades of the colour give a more regal feeling, while a lighter tint gives a more feminine feel to the place. A very powerful colour that can either give your friends the creeps or make them feel like they have super powers. If you like Cleopatra, you would like purple – it was her favourite colour.

Warm Colours

Red

Red is a colour of powerful emotions, both good and bad. It symbolizes passion, energy and intimacy. It is known to have physical effects such as increased blood pressure. Red can also stimulate one’s appetite, maybe that’s why so many of our foods are red in colour. Great choice for the dining room if your guests are unconvinced of your culinary skills. We wouldn’t say the same for your bedroom though, unless you are, well, extremely active in the bedroom.

Orange

Orange is a great colour, not only because no other word rhymes with it, but also because it’s a fun, lively colour! (See how we even used an exclamation mark to prove our point?) It’s intense, but not as intense as red, yet it has the lively and exciting side of yellow as well. It’s almost a childlike red. Darker orange is a good colour for your kitchens and dining rooms as they give a little bit of life to these spaces without becoming too overwhelming. If you want to get people talking, orange ifs your colour.

Yellow

Reminds you of all things bright and beautiful, does it not? It is bright, cheerful and almost a pain to look at at times. This colour is best used alongside other colours, or you could be misconstrued to be a perky person. Darker yellows are usually good to work with, and gives the impression of something vast and open. It can give light to dark hallways, but it can also cause anxiety if it is too strong. If you’re out to grab attention, yellow does the trick like Lady Gaga and her outfits.
