Can You Judge a Person’s Character By Their Shoes?

Yes, you can and apparently you can even accurately predict 90 percent of their personal characteristics too.

Psychologists at the University of Kansas found that just by looking at a person’s shoes, you can correctly judge a stranger’s age, gender, income, political affiliation, emotional state and other vital personality traits.

Shoes are such a giveaway that 63 of the study subjects were able to guess around 90 percent of the wearer’s characters correctly.

A total of 208 pairs of different shoes belonging to volunteers were captured in still images and shown to the participants. The volunteers were asked to provide their most commonly worn shoes for the experiment and they were each asked to fill out a personality questionnaire.

For the experiment, the participants had to look at each pair and guess the gender, age and social status of the owner as well as their personality traits like whether he or she was extrovert or introvert, agreeableness, conscientiousness and openness. In all categories, the participants did extremely well in predicting the characteristics of the volunteers.

“Shoes convey a thin but useful slice of information about their wearers,” the authors wrote. “Shoes serve a practical purpose, and also serve as nonverbal cues with symbolic messages. People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.”

In conclusion, researchers believed that we do wear shoes that reveal our personalities whether it was intentional or not.

So, what are our shoes telling the world about us?

This is rather obvious, expensive shoes suggest high earners while flashy and colourful pairs belong to extroverts. A well-worn pair yet still looking immaculate suggests someone who is conscientious.

Besides that, people who wear practical and functional shoes belong to the agreeable sort, ankle boots are worn by aggressive personalities and uncomfortable looking footwear are actually favoured by calm personalities.

And this is where it gets interesting, researchers reported that those who suffer from some degree of emotional instability or attachment anxiety about their relationships, generally have brand new and well-kept shoes. This is because they tend to overtly worry about their appearance and what others may think of them.

There you have it Venusians. Are you walking with your personality on show?
