Quirky architecture, comforting coffees, heart-warming food options and a welcoming ambiance; Garage 51 by Coffee Societe is certainly a place that’s known for all the right things.
Being one who’s grown up around Sunway area, there were a few things that always irked me – the amount of cars and road bumps, the absence of parking lots and the lack of good cafes for a coffee lover to chill at. Which is why you can imagine how happy I was when I found out that a café has opened around the area!
Established by the same people who run Coffee Societe at Publika, Garage 51 is the latest coffee joint around town that has scored major brownie points in our books. Here are some of the reasons why:
Tucked amongst rows of automotive workshops and random eateries, the chosen location is truly a godsend for those studying, residing and working around Bandar Sunway. Nonetheless, there is one thing that might prevent you from making your visits to Garage 51 a daily staple – parking.
Situated near Sunway University and Monash University, it is no secret your quest to find parking spots will be especially hard; and we haven’t even mentioned on-going renovations around the area yet! Our advice is to pop by during weekends or at night.
As a building, the café itself is an absolute gem. Donned with funky, colourful graffiti and an eye-catching red convertable, Garage 51 is literally a sight for sore eyes.
The quirkiness of the exterior continues beautifully inside too. Dangling light bulbs, makeshift furnitures made from oil drums, wooden tables and a kitchen space made from a shipping container (yes, you read right); all these fit beautifully together into a coffee joint that emits a positive and friendly vibe. Definitely a two thumbs up from us!
In fact, there were even a comment or two from friends who went overseas saying that the café looks like something they’ve visited in Melbourne and Singapore before.
The Societe 100% Arabica beans house blend makes for comforting lattes and satisfying flat whites. Perfect for those who like their coffees a tad bit milkier.
That’s not all though, Garage 51 also serves single origin coffee, meaning coffee beans that are grown own within a single known geographical origin. As of current, the coffee joint is offering Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Gelena Abaya, and customers can either opt for Pour Over or Siphon methods for them.
The Food and Cakes
To our delight, their menu consists of brunch-like meals. From scrambled eggs, toast, baked eggs to muesli – It takes no genius to see (and taste) how well all these would pair up well with coffee. Another plus point is the fact that they also have dinner sets that won’t burn a hole in your wallet! However, do note that their kitchen closes between 4-6pm daily.
That’s alright though, because their awesome cakes are available all day long! Our personal favourite is their carrots cakes. Wonderfully moist and packed with comforting flavours from spices, Societe’s carrot cakes are so good that it will turn an non-carrot cake lover into one. Yes, this is speaking from experience.
If you’re one who’s had bad experiences from unfriendly and impatient baristas and servers, rest assure – the people behind Garage 51 are one of the nicest bunches you’ll meet.
All in all, Garage 51 is a welcoming and professional establishment. To sum up what we feel about them in a short sentence: The place and ambiance makes for an excellent hang out spot, and the coffees and cakes are spot-on!
