It’s what we’ve suspected all along!
Scientists from Tel Aviv University have revealed that the more we sit down, the more “rounder” our behind will become!
This has to do with the fat cells in the buttocks. It seems that cellular expansion plays a key role in fat production. Due to the pressure that you put on cells when you sit, this impact causes them to grow bigger in size by 50 per cent.
In the study, the researchers looked into the accumulation of fat cells in the body and found that nutrition only plays a small role in keeping you trim.
“We found that fat cells exposed to sustained, chronic pressure – such as what happens to the buttocks when you’re sitting down – experienced accelerated growth of lipid droplets, which are molecules that carry fats,” said Professor Amit Gefen from the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
The result, which was published in the Biophysical Journal, concluded that fat cells change in structure when under pressure and are likely to expand, leading to weight gain.
So if you’re a couch potato or lead a very sedentary lifestyle, don’t be surprised to notice how your butt is actually growing bigger and bigger by the day.
