Studio Ghibli will be releasing its first feature anime film ‘When Marnie Was There’, since the departure of co-founders Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata
Here’s what you need to know about this Summer 2014 release:
Anna hasn’t a friend in the world – until she meets Marnie among the sand dunes. But Marnie isn’t all she seems…An atmospheric ghost story with truths to tell about friendship, families and loneliness. Anna lives with foster parents, a misfit with no friends, always on the outside of things. Then she is sent to Norfolk to stay with old Mr and Mrs Pegg, where she runs wild on the sand dunes and around the water. There is a house, the Marsh House, which she feels she recognises – and she soon meets a strange little girl called Marnie, who becomes Anna’s first ever friend. Then one day, Marnie vanishes. A new family, the Lindsays, move into the Marsh House. Having learnt so much from Marnie about friendship, Anna makes firm friends with the Lindsays – and learns some strange truths about Marnie, who was not all she seemed…
2. For this film adaptation, the setting will be changed from Great Britain to a Japanese village on the shores of Hokkaido. The official title in Japanese will be Omoide no Marnie.
3. Hiromasa Yonebayashi will be directing this feature film, after the success of his first directing debut in 2010, ‘The Secret World of Arrietty’.
4. This is the first time that there will be two heroines (Anna and Marnie) in a Ghibli film, which will be voiced by actresses Sara Takatsuki and Kasumi Arimura. According to Marnie producer, Yoshiaki Nishimura, 2014 is the year when women do not have to depend on a hero to do the saving.
5. For the first time ever in a Ghibli movie, there will be an English theme song ‘Fine on the Outside’ which will be sung by none other than American singer/songwriter, Priscilla Ahn.
‘When Marnie Was There’ is scheduled to open in Japan on July 19, 2014. We can’t wait to catch this one!
