This is surely one Visit Malaysia year to remember with the President of the United States dropping by for a quick visit!
If you don’t think that’s a big deal, hear this: Barack Obama’s visit to Malaysia would be the first time in 50 years since the last time an American president visited our country (in case you were wondering, it was Lyndon Johnson in 1966).
From April 26 to 28, Obama will be in town to “highlight the growing strategic and economic relationship” with Malaysia and its “credentials as a moderate, Muslim-majority state and emerging democracy” according to Joshua Kurlantzick, a fellow at the US Council on Foreign Relations.
While that is the official working statement, there is no doubt that the focus of the discussions with leaders from South Korea, Japan and the Philippines on this tour will be focused on China and how they should order their relations with it.
Described as “an emerging partner of the United States,” Malaysia will play host to Obama as he engages with youth leaders from the country and around Southeast Asia on Sunday. Interestingly enough, also on his itinerary are plans to meet our King and a visit to the National Mosque!
No word if Michelle will be following, but we are keeping our fingers crossed. Are you excited for Obama’s visit to Malaysia?
