First Look: Spotlight Malaysia

Ahead of the opening of the first Spotlight store in Malaysia, the VenusBuzz.com team took to the store for a sneak preview today. Is it worth your time and money? Read on to find out.

Having been to several Spotlight outlets in Australia and Singapore, I had high hopes when I heard it was finally coming to Malaysia. Spotlight’s reputation is being a one-stop shop for the home, arts & crafts and fabrics at an affordable price.

Today, we got first dibs on the space at its flagship store opening at Ampang Point Shopping Centre. The grand opening is this Saturday, July 12th 2014 at 10am if you’re wondering.

There is a lot to love about this place. However, there are a few issues one has to contend with when heading there.

First off, the accessibility and parking facilities of the locality is dire. It only has one level for parking which is clearly insufficient to cater for shoppers especially on weekends. The car park is old and not very well lit, with only one disabled parking space.

Lift access was not available when we were there but there is a ramp leading to the mall. It took us 20 minutes to find a parking space in the car park so for first impressions, not a good start.

Outside the mall, there is off-street meter parking facilities but very limited spaces. Should you not be able to find a parking space in the mall, there is an open air car park behind the mall but again, it has limited spaces.

Spotlight is located on the second floor of the mall, with escalator and lift access. Upon entering, it does not look like much from the outside but once you get in there, it is a treasure trove!

With 22,000 square feet of space, the Spotlight design team from Australia has laid out the space in an organised manner. It is essentially a haven for DIY enthusiasts, arts & craft, party accessories and home interior supplies. Signage is clear, prices of items are labelled well and the retail staff seem to be quite informative.

Spotlight breaks down to the following categories:

For the domestic gods/goddesses

Where one can source anything from bed linen to towels, curtains, fabric and kitchenware. The lists of choices are endless so there is something for everyone.

Aspiring home decorators

Besides household products, one can find a huge range of items for decorative touches to the home. Items such as rugs, candles, wall art, vases, curtain tassels to name a few are there for the picking to add that certain “je ne sais quoi” to one’s home.

Avid dressmakers

It is fabric galore with a wonderful array of fabrics in hundreds of colours and shades. The selection is impressive which includes dress and fashion materials as well as knitting, quilting and sewing supplies. From poplin to gingham, silky crepe de chines, organza and luxurious satin, it offers anything a sewer would want.

Party organisers

This will be a great go-to place for anyone organising a party. It covers everything one would need for a fabulous event. The store stocks balloons (including a cool at home helium balloon kit), cards, gift wraps, novelty items, costumes, tableware and more.

Passionate hobbyists & DIY enthusiasts

For DIY enthusiasts, this is indeed a glorious place to get lost in and there is enough inspiration to give you tons of project ideas and indulge your creativity with multiple craft supplies. These products include card making, scrap booking, beading, cake decorating, doll and bear making, to name a few.

In-store workshops

Spotlight will also be having complimentary workshop sessions by creative specialists from time to time. Contact the store here for more details.

What about the ‘RM’?

Pricing wise, Spotlight has managed to keep their prices relatively reasonable. They have kept to their philosophy of the brand, which is making things affordable and accessible to the public.

And in celebration of the launch, Spotlight Malaysia is offering a lucky customer an incredible opportunity to win a 5-day trip for two to the Gold Coast, Australia. Visit www.spotlight.com.my for more details. Anyone who visits the site will also be entitled to sign up as a VIP member to receive exclusive offers and information about the grand opening sales.

There are plans to open three more Spotlight outlets in Malaysia by the end of this year. We managed to find out that the next outlet will be at IPC (Ikano Power Centre). That location will definitely be better in terms of accessibility and parking so we’re looking forward to that!

Having said that, this flagship store is truly a fabulous place to find anything and everything for the home. So hurry down there this Saturday and get in there early to nap that parking spot!
