“Women should not laugh in public!” – so said Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister, Bülent Arinç. Guess who is having the last laugh now?
Earlier this week, Arinc caused an uproar when his speech to mark Eid al-Fitr went viral.
“Chastity is so important. It’s not just a word, it’s an ornament (for women),” he told a crowd gathered to celebrate the end of Ramadan in the city of Bursa where he addressed the issue of “moral corruption” in Turkey.
“A woman should be chaste. She should know the difference between public and private. She should not laugh in public,” as reported by The Guardian.
Naturally, the backlash was imminent.
Turkish women as well as men took to social media to post pictures of themselves laughing out loud and smiling avidly with the hashtags #direnkahkaha which means ‘resist laughter’, #direnkadin meaning ‘resist woman’ and #kahkaha or ‘laughter’.
From Twitter to Instagram, the collective giggles and grins got trending with supports coming in from all over the world.
Even starlet, Emma Watson tweeted her response!
Looking through the gallery of these beautiful women is heartwarming and inspiring to say the least. Solidarity is such a beautiful thing.
Laughing has become a viral protest for all women!
