Oscar de la Renta, we bid thee farewell. Another iconic designer passes away and it is a sad day in the design world today.
De la Renta, who most recently designed the fabulous dress Amal Alamuddin wore at her wedding to George Clooney last month, passed away at his home in Connecticut at the age of 82. Although the designer had been diagnosed with cancer in 2006, the cause of death has not yet been reported.
The iconic designer made his name in the early 1960’s when the first lady, Jackie Kennedy wore his designs frequently. He launched his own label successfully a few years later.
Earlier this month, de la Renta appointed Peter Copping as the new creative director of the Oscar de la Renta brand—reportedly his second choice after a failed effort to bring John Galliano on board.
The designer had also recently been awarded the lifetime achievement award of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
He was also involved in the fragrance and accessories business.
