Céline has gone ultra cool with their Spring / Summer 2015 campaign. Featuring Joan Didion, the American author, novelist and essayist, Marie-Agnès Gillot, the French ballet dancer and choreographer and Freya Lawrence the British model.
The original cool girl, Joan Didion has been a role model for most female writers for years. Having won a National Humanities Medal and written acclaimed essays like Slouching Toward Bethlehem (1968), Didion’s literary legacy is as distinguished as her image in this ad campaign. Having a major literary personality like Joan Didion as their new face for the Summer 2015 ad campaign is a perfect blend of literary royalty and fabulous fashion.
Over the years, many have highlighted Didion’s fashion sense on the internet, with her fashion choices being a topic of discussion. So, Didion is no stranger to fashion. Didion shares the “stage” as it were in the Spring / Summer 2015 campaign for Céline with two other beautiful and accomplished women in their own right: Marie-Agnès Gillot, an excellent ballet dancer and choreographer and Freya Lawrence, the British model. With these amazing women, especially Didion, they bring the brand to the epitome of cool.
Whilst Céline is commended for using an older woman in their campaign, they aren’t the first ones to do so. Dolce & Gabbana also caused ripples with their campaign in December last year with using elderly Italian women for their Spring 2015 line. And Lanvin did it in 2012 with their Spring/Summer campaign by featuring 82-year-old Jacqueline Murdock.
It is refreshing to see fashion giants embrace the beauty of women of all ages. We say hats off to Céline for choosing such an iconic figure to grace their campaign for Didion is not just a trendy personality, but is someone who is a well-respected writer and who believes in female empowerment.
