When it comes to an opening of a new cafe, there’s a buzz and a curiousity to find out what’s behind those closed doors and what there is to come.
An anticipation builds up and for us, when we heard of the opening of Huckleberry Food & Fare, we were very keen to find out what’s in store. This beauty of a place is brought to you by the team behind Kuala Lumpur’s Mezze Bistro. If you’ve been to Mezze Bistro before, you’ll understand why we’ve high hopes for this place.
Nestled in Plaza Damansara in Bukit Damansara, it isn’t hard to find. Upon entering the establishment, we slide open white wooden glass doors and find dark wood floors with beautiful floor tiles lining up a lovely blue counter. There, a glorious sight of cakes, desserts and rows of bread greet us. Our senses are delighted with the sights, sounds and best of all, smells of the place.
We find a quote from one of our favourite classic books on the wall, ‘There ain’t nothing in the world so good when it’s cooked right‘, taken from ‘Huckleberry Finn’ by Mark Twain. That quote simply states what this place is basically about. If the quote is an insight of what morsels of deliciousness will come our way, bring it, we say.
How this place got its name is simple. The culinary director, Shantini Sabapathy enthuses that they took inspiration from a few things but essentially, they wanted an “old fashioned” feel to the place. It’s also about what kind of food they loved to eat and what inspired them. So, you’ll find comfort food with a twist inspired from vintage recipes inherited from their grandmothers. More importantly, it’s about them getting good food done the right way.
They take a healthier approach to flavours and in their culinary creations. There are almost 25 varieties of handcrafted, artisan gourmet bread and pastries! A wide array of items is offered here: danishes, pastries, cakes, tarts, florentines (as pictured above), sandwiches, baked eggs, pies, soups and salads. There are even vegetarian options in the menu so they’ve pretty much covered all their bases.
If that isn’t enough, they also serve fresh slow-pressed juices, smoothies, root beer floats, sodas , wine and organic loose-leaf tea from Roleaf Tea. No food establishment is complete without great coffee, and they use their own Sumatran Gayo House Blend, which has notes of vanilla and berries with a nutty dark chocolate finish.
The food menu was crafted by both Shantini and Executive Chef, Yves Renou, who also helms the kitchen at Mezze Bistro. Some must-tries at Huckleberry Food & Fare are:
the Quick Bacon & Egg Pasta (RM25.90) where they use their own house-made duck bacon which is divine ,
House-made Salt Beef Sandwich which has a whopping portion of 170gm of meat, (RM29.90),
Chili Cheese Toast with Fried Egg (RM13.90),
Superfood Salad (RM25.90),
and their Banana French Toast (RM24.90).
Bread is clearly the star of the show at Huckleberry Food & Fare. They use traditional French bread making techniques by their Master Baker, Christophe Gros who has over 22 years of experience in classic French bread and pastries.
Their signature bread is the Miche Sourdough range. If you’re a bread lover, you have to try the bread here. Their sourdough starter is one-year-old and they’ve 3 kinds of sourdough available – rye, baguette and farmers bread. There’s also the classic multigrain, wholemeal, brioche, baguettes, the braided challah and milk bread. All of which are baked in their state-of-the-art 120 square feet size Bongard Omega2 artisanal oven, which produces traditional masonry quality bread.
All their artisan goods are made on-site. They pride themselves on using the freshest and best quality ingredients, such as Valrhona chocolate, fresh milk which they get delivered daily, French butter and a house-blend of organic flour. They even make their own jams and kaya in-house to serve at the cafe!
At present, Huckleberry Food & Fare is open during the day but the plan is to eventually open for dinner and cocktails at night. If it’s food heaven you’re after, then do check them out. This new eatery in KL will rock your palate. You won’t be disappointed.
