5 Reasons You Should Lift Weights to Lose Weight

Did you know that weight-training helps you burn more calories than cardio? Read on for more reasons to include weights in your fitness routine.

Here are 5 great reasons to start lifting weights:

1. You burn more fat

When you do a weight lifting circuit, your metabolism stays elevated and you continue to burn fat for several hours afterward. During regular cardio exercise, you stop burning fat shortly after the workout.

In fact, researchers found that people who did a total-body workout with 3 big-muscle moves, had raised metabolisms for 39 hours afterward.

2. You will look great naked

The biggest misconception is that most people think that pumping iron can render them big and bulky. Unlike men, women have 10-30 times less testosterone, which are hormones responsible for muscle growth. Hence, women are much less likely to bulk up with normal weight lifting.

In fact, weight training can slim you down, create new curves and give you a more defined look.

3. You’ll build stronger bones

Weight training helps strengthen the muscles surrounding your bones and decreases the risk of osteoporosis. A study showed that older women who did weight training two days per week for a year were able to increase their bone density by 1%, while another group who did not exercise had decreased bone density by 1.8% to 2.5%.

4. You will have better body coordination

If you regularly weight train, your balance and coordination will improve. How? By working out all your muscles regularly, you avoid muscle imbalances (ie: one leg stronger than the other).

5. You can lift heavy objects easily

Need to replace the water at the cooler? Overweight babies to hoist around? Carrying groceries home? All of these will be zero problem for a weight training regular. Weight training strengthens and tones your muscles by contracting them against a resisting force (ie: by doing a push up or lifting weights).
