How to nail the Christmas and New Year spirit all month long
I remember flocking to a budget nail salon with other high school girls just before Christmas, so we could have our nails painted. Hours of painful waiting, we’d go home with a reindeer, a Christmas tree and a santa face painted all over our red and green nails.
Thankfully, nail art trends get much more sophisticated nowadays and no longer would people smirk on our literal nails. Instead, we are spoiled with choices from DIY divas who have simplified Christmas candy canes, gifts and NYE’s glitz, much to our nails’ joy.
Here, we lure you with the idea of partying all month long sans the hangover and bloated tummy.
The principle to swear by this holiday season is ‘you can never have too much sparkle!’. Our latest MANICyours feature shows you how to get ‘em sparkly nails for less than RM31, while the pinners and instagrammers agree with us.
Paint a base colour of choice, and decorate it with glittered nail polishes – paint a coat of glitter all over your nails, create a glittered French manicure, use a cosmetic sponge to dab the glitter on top of the nails, or draw vertical glitter lines in 3 colours on your coloured nails.
2. Red & White
It’s a tad harder to walk away with red and green nails, unless you can nail that matte nail combo well. Red and white, however, is a classic Christmas combo that reminds us of an old skool celebration often seen in children novels and movies. This holiday season, recreate the swirly candy cane pattern, give a Christmas twist to the foolproof polka dot nail art or if you’re feeling nitpicky – draw a few Christmas sweater patterns on your nails using nail art pen.
3. Christmas gift wrap
‘Tis the season of giving and one can always use a reminder to start the Christmas shopping early. For those blessed with steady hands, paint your nails forest green and cherry alternately then draw a gold ribbon on each nail with a dotting tool. Alternatively, use the ribbon design on your accent nail and draw striped designs for the rest. If you’re expecting a Tiffany & Co. in your stocking – say it with your nails (or else try our less intricate version of Tiffany nails)!
We put Ronasutra’s ‘makeup so good, you can sleep in it!’ claim to the test.
Let’s set one thing straight: I am a beauty newbie. While I adore fellow ladies who can apply makeup even without a mirror, I prefer to step out of the house only in 3 essentials: gel moisturiser, 40SPF face sunblock and loose powder. Touch-ups are not in my dictionary and honestly – sometimes I am too lazy to get out of bed and remove my makeup before hitting Dreamland.
Ronasutra, a Malaysian-made cosmetic brand, promises not to smack me for my repetitive crime acts. In fact, the 100% natural mineral makeup line does not contain oil, talc, synthetic ingredients, dyes, fragrances and preservaties. Thus, assures that regular use of their products, blemishes, excessive skin oiliness and congested pores will disappear. To know more about Ronasutra, read our report here.
We tried and tested the ambitious claim(s), and tell you why you should add Ronasutra 2-in-1 Mineral Foundation & Powder to your long (or short) list of beauty regime.
The status quo of my skin
I have a rather problematic facial & body skin. I have a combination facial skin, with the cheeks area being the driest and the forehead being the oiliest. Breakouts, rashes and peelings are normal occurrences during stress and weather changes. Residing in both Kuala Lumpur and Bandung, Indonesia, I experience breakouts for almost a week after I step foot in either place.
Besides, I develop allergic reactions upon using some cosmetic products, especially foundation. A few hours after I apply foundation, the facial skin will itch, rashes start appearing and the next morning a pimple or two would show up. The symptom happens regardless of cosmetic brands, only the degree of rash varies.
Above are some of the reasons why I am not adventurous when it comes to cosmetics, and use only minimum amount of makeup.
Pros & Cons: Ronasutra Mineral Attraction (2-in-1 Foundation & Powder)
Ronasutra 2-in-1 Mineral Foundation & Powder came decked in a compact luxe black packaging, giving buyers a glimpse of the actual product inside. The fuss-free packaging was, unfortunately, not completed with a convincing look of the actual product.
A friend whom I told the product about, was rather hesitant to give it a try given the look of the container, although all Ronasutra’s goodness are clearly stated on top of it – a move much appreciated for many cosmetic products appear confusing to new customers.
Ronasutra is a makeup line dedicated to Asian women (and men), and it is showcased very well in 5 shade choices for its 2-in-1 Mineral Foundation. Starting with Cream Peach (01) for pinkish, fairer skin tones; the shades go all the way to Mocha (05) that is suitable for yellowish / reddish darker skin tones.
My shade of choice is Honey (04, suitable for medium fair, reddish skin tones) and I have been pleasantly surprised that two fellow women (24 and 60) whose skin tones are slightly darker and lighter than mine have applied Ronasutra 2-in-1 Mineral Foundation & Powder and were both content with it.
If there was one thing we could complain about Ronasutra 2-in-1 Mineral Foundation & Powder is the effort it takes to keep things tidy while applying the product. When you open it, you will see a rotatable cover that allows you to open and close the small holes to let out some foundation/powder.
In the attempt to shake out the foundation/powder on the sponge, however, quite a fair bit of it spills onto the ground, making the application process a tad messy.
Claim: ‘Problem skin? No problem!’
I first tried out Ronasutra 2-in-1 Mineral Foundation & Powder after 3 days of little sleep and abundant workloads. Although a little cynical (and a lot grumpy), I tried the product anyway. And boy, did it blow my mind! My grayish face was instantly radiant in a matter of minutes and I truly felt like Cinderella after the Fairy Godmother’s wand swing. I went out for a catchup dinner afterwards and my friends honestly thought I magically managed to keep such radiant skin if sleep-deprived.
My second encounter with Ronasutra 2-in-1 Mineral Foundation & Powder was on Urbanscapes day. I applied it at 4pm, before braving the extreme heat and sweaty night. When I finally removed my makeup at a little past 1, no discolouration, rashes or blemishes appeared on my face.
On the third attempt to test out Ronasutra 2-in-1 Mineral Foundation & Powder, I was determined to test out the lasting factor. Less than a week after coming home to Bandung, my skin was naturally still experiencing breakouts. After applying moisturiser, I applied the foundation/powder and to my surprise, I only experienced very minor itchiness and there was no exposure of dry, peeling skin as apparent upon application of similar products during a breakout.
Verdict has it, Ronasutra’s claim of being a BFF to problematic skin stays true to the core.
Claims: ‘Makeup you can sleep on!’ and ‘Lasting makeup for 16 hours’
I first applied Ronasutra 2-in-1 Mineral Foundation & Powder at 6.15AM and let it be until around 10PM; this means no touch-ups were involved. In between the hours, I went for an indoor church service for 1.5 hours, napped for an hour did heavy cooking for approximately 3 hours, and went out for dinner for 2.5 hours.
I was very pleased that my skin did not turn oily nor the foundation/powder faded after those activities, as proven by the camera snaps of me around the clock. In other words, Ronasutra’s claims of ‘makeup you can sleep on’ and ‘lasting makeup for 16 hours’ are well-proven.
We would highly recommend Ronasutra 2-in-1 Mineral Foundation & Powder to the beauties with sensitive and/or allergic skin, also those who seek for non-intrusive makeup with natural-looking coverage in one simple product.
If you expect for a foundation to apply on top of concealer to form a cover-up makeup, we would recommend you try a dedicated product for desired effect.
Ronasutra 2-in-1 Mineral Foundation & Powder is priced at RM48 / pack of 8g. Purchase all Ronasutra products via their webstore or at its first dedicated cosmetic counter in Malaysia at Plaza Shah Alam, Selangor.

As fans of both Urban Decay cult favourites – the Naked Palette and Naked 2 Palette, we couldn’t help but squeal in excitement over the news that the brand has now released a matte palette called Naked Basics!
Urban Decay tweeted earlier today that their first ever matte Naked palette is small enough to fit in your pocket (making this an awesome travel kit in our handbags), but still bold and versatile enough to create a day or night time look.
The Naked Basics palette comes with six colours; Venus (soft, off-white demi-matte), Foxy (cream bisque matte), Walk of Shame (very light nude matte), Naked2 (taupe matte), Faint (warm, dusty brown matte) and Crave (deepest, darkest brown/black matte) – four of which are new and exclusive shades.
While most women prefer glittery eyeshadows, matte eyeshadows are perfect for contouring, lining, and highlighting to create the right amount of definition for any occasion. Or for the days when you’re craving more color, pair them with your fiercest, boldest shadows.
Richer than other mattes, the color goes on with a smooth, luxe finish (not chalky or powdery). There’s even one demi-matte shade, Venus, which has the tiniest touch of satin—perfect for highlighting and adding dimension.
Unlike the previous two palettes though, this one does not come with a complimentary brush – but hey, some sacrifices need to be made especially when it’s this compact!
No news of when this will be available in Malaysia, but for those of you who NEED this now, now, now – head on over to UrbanDecay for more information (approx. RM82) or try to get someone to bring it back for you!
L’Oreal, the French cosmetics giant has agreed to acquire Californian privately owned makeup company, Urban Decay Cosmetics LLC.
Famous for cult favourites such as the much covetted Naked Palette, Urban Decay is well known for its “beauty with an edge” range of products that is popular among youthful, highly-involved cutting-edge consumers who are attracted by the fashion-forward image of the brand.
Currently, Urban Decay is available mostly in Sephora and through its online stores – but with this new development with L’Oreal, it is possible that the brand will be more accessible to the masses through multiple channels such as other brands under its wing such as Maybelline New York, and Lancome.
“Urban Decay will beautifully complement L’Oréal Luxe’s portfolio of iconic brands. It is the make-up specialist we needed to fully satisfy young women in search of playful colors and inspiration in selective distribution, at an accessible price point. It is totally additional to our existing propositions and as such it will contribute significantly to the growth of the Division in the years to come,” said Nicolas Hieronimus, President L’Oréal Luxe.
“L’Oréal’s strong innovation capabilities and presence in every channel of distribution will enable Urban Decay to reach its full potential in the marketplace,” added Tim Warner, General Manager, Urban Decay. “Together, we have great ambitions for the future.”
The closing is subject to regulatory approval, which is expected by the end of the year.
What do you think of this new development? Excited to see if Urban Decay cosmetics would be more affordable now, or worried that the acquisition would affect the overall style of the brand that made it so appealing in the first place – not to mention their different practices in regards to animal testing? Sound off below!
For centuries, women all over the world have been using natural oils to condition human hair. Thanks to its restorative and shine-infusing properties, women today still favour it to counter the effects of having dry and unmanageable hair problems.
Here are 7 natural oils that you should look out for when choosing haircare products:
Almond Oil – The origins of Almond oil can be traced to the Middle East where it was renowned for its nourishing properties. Almond Oil is rich in lipid and vitamin E, and well-known for its ability to soften and give hair its much needed elasticity.
Moroccan Argan Oil – “Liquid gold” is another name for Moroccan Argan Oil and aptly so as this oil which is known for its restructuring and moisturising properties. It is believed to contain twice as much vitamin E as olive oil. Rich in anti-oxidants, the trees that produce this oil are so precious they’re protected by the United Nations.
Camellia Oil – The darling of the beauty industry for enhancing hair shine, this oil was very popular amongst the ladies of the Imperial Court for its ability to revitalise hair and boost natural shine. Now a trend in the hair world, this pale amber-green oil has been used as a traditional conditioner for decades.
Babassu Oil – One of the best factors of this oil is that it deeply conditions hair leaving it smooth, soft and supple without leaving any residue. Babassu oil is extracted from the seeds of the babassu palm and can be found growing in the southern regions of Brazil, a country filled with women with great hair – namely, Gisele Bundchen, Alessandra Ambrosio.
Coconut Oil – Prominent in Southeast Asia, coconut oil is known in the beauty world for its ability to nourish dry and unmanageable hair. It contains a compound called lauric acid, which creates a weightless protective barrier that retains moisture and gives hair long-lasting suppleness.
Olive Oil – The benefits of olive oil have proven to be so great that it has been used since the dawn of civilizations ranging from Mesopotamia to Ancient Egypt and Greece. It penetrates the hair cuticle so well, that it truly nourishes and conditions the hair, leaving it soft and smooth as the necessary moisture and nutrients are absorbed easily.
Jojoba Oil – Have an unmanageable condition of flyaways? Jojoba oil will be most beneficial as it’s known for ‘good absorption’, this golden oil provides moisturisation, thus helping to contain unruly and unmanageable hair and ensuring that hair stays in place.
Being backstage at a fashion show is always exciting, and very often you hear of the hustle behind the scenes and how hectic everything is – but not so at Khoon Hooi’s Spring/Summer 2013 show, held at KLPAC yesterday.
Everyone was calm and collected, and everything had been planned out and was going on schedule – perhaps, this was due to the fact that this was a solo Khoon Hooi show as opposed to a typical collaboration featuring two to three designers at one go.
VenusBuzz.com were invited backstage by M.A.C who were collaborating with the designer for the first time on a solo show, to get a glimpse of the makeup trends to look forward to this coming Spring/Summer 2013 season.
We spoke to M.A.C Senior Artist, Haritha Shan on the inspiration behind the look.
“Spring is really fresh, and the collection is very floral-inspired. So, M.A.C created something with a little more browns and focused on the eyes, leaving the skin very natural.
This season you’ll be seeing a lot of ‘invisible’ – invisible contouring and invisible brows. Invisible in the sense that we’re just combing the brows and filling in the hair – we don’t want it to look very stapled on to the face.”
In terms of the lips, they were kept very close to the natural lip colour of the model.
Key products used to achieve this look were the Strobe Cream to create a glow to the skin, Face & Body Foundation for a natural tinted effect, Paint Pot in Constructive which is a nice chocolate brown for the eyes, and finally Scultping Cream to contour.
An interesting tip shared by Haritha, was to simply apply the Sculpting Cream to your palms, rub them together, and gently pat onto the top of your cheekbones – with no brush! This gives a softer, more subtle and natural look as brushes tend to give a harsher look.

With the number of skincare products out there, it’s hard to say which one’s the best as different skin types have different requirements. Interestingly, with the increasing amount of irritants and external factors like cosmetics applied on the skin on a daily basis, research has shown that whatever is put on the skin penetrates all skin layers – all the way into blood and even to urine!
The average adult, according to the National Geographic’s Green Guide, uses at least nine personal care products a day, which contain approximately 120 chemicals. It’s shocking that more than 100kg of cosmetic will be applied on our skin in a lifetime. Although one or two exposures to these chemicals are not likely to cause harm, a lifetime of exposure may do more harm than we realize and in many, this has led to sensitive skin.
Recognising this problem, Novexpert’s natural skincare meets medicinal technology in a groundbreaking anti-aging skin care line which was developed by its team of French doctors who are recognised experts and researchers in the skincare industry.
Their brief was to develop, based only on scientific research without marketing or financial constraints, the most effective anti-aging formulations that will also be suitable for sensitive skin as well as safe for long term use.
According to Aileen Chan, Chief Executive Officer of LiveLife and a beauty industry veteran, Novexpert has helped her with her eczema.
“A few years ago, I started developing sensitive skin and atopic eczema. It was a rather daunting task to find a skincare I could use as I had to experiment with different brands of skincare. In most cases, I had allergic reactions and ended up spending money on products that I was not able to use. I now realized that the amount of chemicals that I have been applying to my skin has somewhat led to my sensitive skin and atopic eczema.
With Novexpert, I was pleasantly surprised that my skin did not react to it. I am delighted that I have finally found a brand that is not only suitable for my skin, but is technologically advanced, ultra effective and comes with an unbelievably great price.”
Novexpert is a 100% cosmeceutical formulations that delivers an instantaneous healthy glow effect within 5 seconds, an immediate lifting effect within 5 minutes and a durable anti-wrinkle effect lasting 5 weeks. The formulations also set a new standard by being uniquely 0% chemical with 0% preservatives, 0% essential oils, 0% propylene glycol and 100% hypoallergenic.
Emerging studies recently revealed that microbes living on your skin, in your airways, and in your gut protect against inflammatory diseases and act like a natural protection. The studies also suggest that the increase of inflammatory diseases, such as allergies, is due to a loss in biodiversity of people’s living environment and their commensal skin bacteria.
Preservatives used in many skincare actually destroy the good bacteria on the skin. As a consequence of this, the skin becomes more sensitive and reactive as it has been completely stripped of its natural protection.
All formulations from the Novexpert Doctor line are Ecocert certified 100% natural origin – a true innovation as even organic brands can only claim 95% to 98% natural origin. No chemical preservatives (0% chemical) are used in Novexpert. Instead, Novexpert uses a natural system of preservation which makes the brand so unique, non-toxic, 100% biodegradable and certified 100% hypoallergenic. This innovative brand which combines ultra effectiveness and high tolerance with safety, has already garnered 11 awards within 3 years since its launch in Europe.
The Novexpert Doctor Line consists of 3 ranges:
Integral Anti-Aging Range:
The Expert Anti-Aging Cream, 40 ml tube
The Expert Anti-Aging Fluid, 40ml tube
Express Anti-Aging Range:
The Repulp Cream, 40ml tube

The Instant Lift Serum, 30 ml airless pump

Some say our tresses are a lady’s greatest assets, well we couldn’t agree more.
From short to long hairstyles, it’s safe to say that we are quite the clingy lot. We hold on dear to our hair because it’s all part of the package of looking good. Why else would the girls of America’s Next Top Model wail like little babies when it was time to cut their hair?
Now, we can do a lot of things to keep our locks in tip-top condition. But perhaps, there are days when it does not co-operate and we end up with unruly mane of a lioness. Here are 5 simple tips to help you avoid bad hair day and still look like your fine self.
#1 Soda Power
Most of the time, the complaint is limp hair. When you’re in the shower, sprinkle a small amount of baking soda into your palm and mix with your shampoo. Lather as per usual while giving your scalp a good scrub. The baking soda work to remove the buildup residue from the styling products you’ve been using. This helps to make hair cleaner and manageable.
#2 Rinse and Repeat
It is worth all the time you spend in the bathroom to rinse your hair clear of shampoo and conditioner after every wash. Leaving traces of cleansing and conditioning agents can result in a buildup as well. Thus, hair appears sticky, flat and heavy, not to mention your scalp will itch and be irritated.
#3 Dry Sensibly
Wet or damp hair are more vulnerable to lose its shape. So, the best thing to do is blow your hair dry from the roots up and away from the direction or style you want to achieve. This will help create fullness and make hair easier to manage. And if you have the time, alternate between hot and cold air, the former helps to form the style while the latter helps to keep it there.
#4 The Day After
Right, so your hair looks gorgeous on the day you wash it but goes all flat and lifeless the day after. A quick fix would be to step in to the shower with a shower cap. Take advantage of the heat and moisture from inside the cap to ‘reconstruct’ your hair. If this fails, use a dry shampoo or baby powder to absorb the oil and give your hair a lift.
A smart move is to invest in a wide-tooth comb instead of cheap hairbrushes which can damage hair with its coarse and rigid ends. But most importantly is to invest your time and give your brush and comb a good wash. Most of the time, styling products and your own oil are clinging onto the tools, so you’re most probably transferring grime back to your hair, leaving it dull.
