Tried & Tested: L’Oréal’s Mythic Oil for Personalised Hair Solutions

Category : Beauty , Hair , Skincare

Dry, oily, damaged, fine, frizzy – these are some of the varying textures most haircare products cater to but what happens when you have more than just one type of problem hair?

Here’s when customising your hair products come into play; with L’Oréal Professionnel’s new lineup of products under the Mythic Oil range, this is made possible by having tailor-made rituals consisting of precious oils used as beauty remedies by ancient civilisations that offer hair personalised nutrition, incredible radiance, and ultimate softness.

From Ancient Egypt to Chinese, Japanese and Indian civilizations, women have turned to precious oils for beauty rituals as well as medicinal and aromatherapy purposes.

Inspired by this ancestral beauty ritual, L’Oréal Professionnel reinvents the tradition of beauty oils with its latest hair solution. Using the finest oils to create special customised blends and fusing them with its technical haircare expertise, the brand introduces Mythic Oil, a range of four tailor-made beauty oils – each one targeted for different hair needs so that women can discover the mystic secret to beautiful hair!

Original Mythic Oil (All Hair Types)

In 2011, the original Mythic Oil was created to suit all hair types – and with just a few drops of this nourishing oil, hair is transformed to become more shiny and supple, thanks to the combination of avocado oil and grapeseed oil. It is said that the product is so effective and popular, that three bottles are sold every minute worldwide!

However, realising that women have different hair types along with varying needs, L’Oréal Professionnel introduced three customised precious blends of Mythic Oil to cater to all haircare needs.

Mythic Oil Milk (Fine Hair)

Women with fine hair can now look forward to stronger and more luscious hair with Mythic Oil Milk. This precious oil is a blend of Royalactin and Passiflora Oil. Derived from Royal Jelly, Royalactin is rich in antioxidants and B-complex vitamins, while Passiflora Oil is rich in vitamin C, calcium and phosphorous. A lightweight oil, Mythic Oil Milk deeply nourishes hair. Use this as a post-shampoo detangler for added moisture or as a pre-blow dry conditioner to deliver shine, softness and anti-frizz protection. For added softness that improves the appearance of split ends, Mythic Oil Milk can be used as a finishing spritz.

Mythic Oil Rich Oil (Thick/Frizzy Hair)

Think your unruly and thick hair can’t be controlled? Not if you use L’Oréal Professionnel’s richest nourishment – Mythic Oil Rich Oil. With its taming and anti-frizz effect, this combines a blend of precious rice bran oil to intensely moisturise and replenish unruly hair for restored sleekness, and argan oil that deeply nourishes rebellious hair with its rich content of vitamin E and essential fatty acids. Use as a conditioner pre-blow dry to restore softness for easier styling and added control. Or for the ultimate finishing touch, spritz this for long- lasting anti-frizz taming effect.

Mythic Oil Colour Glow Oil (Coloured Hair)

Even colour-treated hair can benefit from L’Oréal Professionnel’s Mythic Oil. This special blend offers dazzling radiance and protection for hair that has undergone colour treatment. With its linseed oil, hair fibre is enveloped in a high concentration of essential fatty acids for added radiance and shine. Meanwhile, cranberry oil further protects with its potent antioxidant properties. The result? Glossy looking glamour! Use daily as a UV filter to protect hair from the sun’s damaging rays, as a pre-blow dry shine enhancer to smooth hair for a high-shine appearance, and as a finishing touch for a dazzling sparkle to your hair.

How to apply your Mythic Oil for a gorgeous blow-dry:

Step 1: Section hair into eight sections after shampooing and tower drying.

Step 2: Warm your Mythic Oil blend in the palms of your hands. Apply to each section, starting from the ends and working your way to the crown.

Step 3: Leave for two minutes to allow it to penetrate before blow-drying. Style as usual. Hair has never looked for gorgeous, healthy and shiny!

THE VENUSBUZZ.COM ‘ OIL BAR’ EXPERIENCE

Thanks to the success of the legendary Mythic Oil, L’Oréal Professionnel has gone on to introduce a whole new range of haircare products that incorporate legendary beauty oils to further nourish and enhance your hair for round-the-clock beautiful tresses!

We tried out the Oil Bar, a pampering three-step treatment at all L’Oréal Professionnel salons, during the recent KL Fashion Week (in which they were official sponsors backstage) to experience for ourselves the relaxing and soothing effects of the Mythic Oil on our damaged, dry, and over-processed hair at Miko Galere in Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur.

Step 1: Scalp Purifying Pre-Shampoo Concentrate

This salon service introduces the intensive Mythic Oil Scalp Purifying Pre-Shampoo Concentrate. Enriched with three essential oils – Citrus, Cypress and Tea Tree Oil – it offers a deeply refreshing experience, leaving the scalp feeling energised and soothed. This concentrate is applied on wet hair and then massaged in to offer a relaxing and pleasant experience while the concentrate takes effect.

Step 2: Mythic Oil Shampoo

After rinsing off the concentrate, your hair stylist will proceed to shampoo hair with the intensely nourishing Mythic Oil Shampoo.

Step 3: Made-to-Measure Intense Treatment

After diagnosing your hair needs, your hair stylist will prepare a unique made-to-measure treatment that is not only perfectly suited for your hair type but also to your desires. The made-to-measure treatment offers an intensive solution of mixing a Mythic Oil blend with either the Mythic Oil Conditioner or the Mythic Oil Masque. This is then applied to your hair for instant hair restoration and nourishment.

Verdict:

After a good blow dry, we were pleased with how light and nourished our hair felt and the best thing is how good it smells too. Not too overpowering, but very natural and light – we even keep a bottle on our office table now to leave in our tresses after lunch hour to sort of neutralise the after-food smell in our hair! There’s an almost immediate bounce in our hair after application, and it definitely makes it easier for us to run our fingers through our hair (without it getting stuck due to the usual tangles since our hair is super dry), so this Mythic Oil is a definite winner in our eyes. Also, we love the limited Couture Edition by Dilek Hanif which comes with a bracelet!

So where do you go to get your hands on this wondrous Mythic Oil? It’s available at all L’Oréal Professionnel salons nationwide for RM75. For your nearest L’Oréal Professionnel salon, contact the L’Oréal Professionnel Hotline at 03-7727 2215 or log on to the website.

Home Remedies for Dry Hair

Category : Beauty , Hair

The dream is soft and shiny tresses but the reality is what you get at the end of a broomstick.

Dry hair is a very common and distressing condition. It can be caused by a number of factors like severe dandruff, imbalance diet, chemical processing and pollution. This leads to loss of moisture from the hair shaft and causes your mane to look lacklustre, lose its shine as well as vitality or elasticity. That’s when you notice the frizzy and brittle bits. If not treated properly, dry hair can cause widespread damage like breakage throughout the lengths of the hair.

Lucky for us, there are ways to combat the dry hair phenomenon. And what’s even better is that recovery begins at home!

Eggs Booster

Eggs are a good source of protein and lecithin, which can help to strengthen and repair hair by adding moisture, shine and texture.

Fix it ~ Mix 3 eggs with 2 tablespoons of olive or coconut oil, add 1 tablespoon honey and stir well. Apply the mixture onto damp hair and scalp. Cover with a shower cap and leave on for 30 minutes before washing off with mild shampoo and lukewarm water.

Avocado & Honey Treatment

Avocado is known for its many benefits and one of it is to repair damaged hair. Its oil is light enough to provide moisture. Couple with the rich proteins, it gives you best nutrients to smooth down unruly hair.

Fix it ~ Peel 1 medium avocado, remove the stone and mash the flesh together with 2 tablespoons honey. Massage mixture into hair and leave on for 20-30 minutes. Wash hair as per normal after that.

Honey Hair Mask

This nature’s sweetener is a natural humectant which means it has the ability to attract and lock in moisture to leave hair feeling soft, shiny and nourished.

Fix it ~ Massage 1/2 cup of honey to freshly washed, damp hair and let sit for 20 – 30 minutes. For extremely dry and damaged hair, try mixing honey with 1 to 2 tablespoons of egg yolk or coconut oil to help make the treatment more effective.

Aloe Vera Conditioner

A plant that is known for its excellent moisturising properties, aloe vera can help treat dry hair to become more manageable and lustrous in time.

Fix it ~ Mix 3-4 tablespoons of aloe vera gel with 1/2 a lemon and add 3-5 drops of essential oils in a bowl. Apply the mixture to your just-washed hair and leave on for 5-10 minutes at least. Then rinse thoroughly.

Oily Hair No More!

Category : Beauty , Hair , VenusMaxisFeed

You wash and style your hair in the morning, and it looks great! But within a few short hours, it starts to flatten out and look stringy. Yup ladies, that all-familiar nuisance of having oily hair!

Oily hair is a fairly annoying and often frustrating condition. Some of the causes of this oily predicament may be due to your food intake, usage of wrong hair product, washing your hair daily (gasp!) and well, maybe even due to our hot and humid Malaysian weather. Don’t let that get you down though. Because the good news is that oily hair is quite simple to overcome and manage!

Here are five things you can use and do to tame unwarranted oily tresses;

Acidic rinses.

Rinsing your hair with naturally acidic liquids is great for reducing the amount of oil in your hair. These liquids would contain tannic acid, which is a natural astringent that would leave your hair looking clean without over-stripping its natural oils. Examples of these liquids are diluted lemon juice, tea and vinegar.

Curl them up.

Curling or waving your hair is one way to reduce oily appearances. This is because those extra curls and waves make it harder for natural oil from your scalp to slide and travel down the shafts of your hair.

Minimise hair washes.

We understand how you’d be tempted to wash your hair each time it gets oily and greasy (us too!), but don’t! Every time you shampoo your hair, your scalp would work overtime to compensate for the lost oil. This would cause an overproduction of oil, resulting in more oily problems.

The oatmeal treatment.

Cooked oatmeal is a simple and great remedy to absorb oil from the roots. It also helps exfoliate the scalp! If you’re pressed for time and need a quick fix, just take a small handful of dry oatmeal, sprinkle it onto your scalp, leave it on for a minute or two to absorb the oil and simply brush it out. Quick, simple and all-natural, just the way we like it!

Apple cider vinegar

Mix some apple cider vinegar with water and pour it in a spray bottle. Rinse your hair with the mixture and then wash out the hair with warm water. This can help control shampoo build-up.

However, do keep in mind that your hair needs a substantial amount of oil to keep it from being dry and brittle. Oil is essential to protect your hair shafts from breaking, keeps your scalp in good condition, and gives your hair that nice, healthy-looking sheen. So don’t go overboard ridding the oil and grease away!

Tried and Tested Hair Loss Solutions

Category : Beauty , Hair , VenusMaxisFeed

Be it hair strands on your pillow or a slightly obvious bald spot, signs of hair loss can be very disheartening.

Let’s face it girls, our crowning glory is one of our most precious assets. Just look at the amount of time and money spent on our hair! So yes, it gets pretty depressing when our hair starts to thin out. Good news is, this predicament can be managed! Here are some tried and tested solutions that will help curb your hair loss woes.

Shampoo

More often than not, the main cause of hair loss is an oily scalp. An oily scalp would result in complications like scalp acne, dandruff and erythema (scalp redness). All these lead to, well, hair loss.

Use deep-cleansing shampoos, these would help eliminate all the excess sebum and oil. Also, after shampooing, rinse with cold water. Not only will this make your hair less frizzy, it will also tighten up scalp pores, minimise oil secretion and lock nutrients from your shampoo. Sweet!

Conditioner

Conditioners are needed to replenish the lost moisture and oils caused by shampoos. ‘Isn’t hair loss caused by oiliness,’ you ask? Very true, but if you skimp out on conditioners, your hair will look dry and limp. The golden rule is to try and not apply any conditioner on your scalp.

Scalp Treatments

Good news is, scalp treatments really do work. The bad news is, not all treatments are effective. Finding a treatment that’s suitable for you is not going to be easy. It may require several trial and errors sessions, which can be time-consuming and a bother to your wallet. But don’t give up! Our advice is to firstly check out treatments that are made from organic ingredients, and usually, treatments that give out a minty sensation are more effective (because mint has oil-balancing properties).

Hair Regrowth Stimulators

Items such as aloe vera and coconut oil can do wonders. Just rub a little onto your scalp, leave it on for about 15 minutes and let them do their magic. Or you could also mix olive oil with rosemary oil or lavender essential oil. These would all stimulate hair growth. Hair tonics help too, but as usual, organic ingredients are preferred.

Diet

Food also plays an important role in hair loss. This is simply explained by the fact that like our body, our hair gets its nutrients from the food we eat.

For healthy hair, our diet should contain subsequent amount of Vitamin E and iron. Therefore ladies, drink more water, eat less sodium-laden junk food and consume more greens. Trust us, there will be a difference!

And ladies, please don’t be disheartened when you don’t see immediate results. Treating hair loss requires continuous time and effort. Also, treating it is not a one-time thing- you’ve got to constantly maintain it. Yes, this may all sound tedious but hey, what beauty regime isn’t?

5 Hair Trends for 2013 Spring/Summer

Category : Beauty , Hair

The start of the year is always an exciting time to try out new looks which will set the tone for your style direction through the rest of the year!

Often times, having good hair is the best accessory to jazz up any outfit and here are 5 of the trends taken off the runways for Spring/Summer 2013 that may help keep your look current and right on trend.

1. Center parting

We have always loved girls who could carry off the center parting – it always reminds us of sleek, elegant models with not a wisp out of place! Here’s a tip though; if you feel like you can’t pull this look off, try parting slightly off center so it’s less harsh. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be super harsh with every strand plastered on to your head; keeping it slightly disheveled in front will frame your face and lend you a cool  sophistication.

2. Deep side parting

If center parting is not your thing, try a deep side part – making your usual side part even more exaggerated by parting the hair from one side of your face (instead of from the top of your face, somewhere closer to the corner of your face – let’s just say go as close to the ear as possible, without looking silly) and sweeping it over your forehead. A tip for this look to be current is to have a few strands lose around the face. It should look effortless.

3. Slicked back

Another modelesque look, is to show off that beautiful face of yours (as opposed to hiding behind your hair) by slicking it off at the top of your head using hair products like sculpting wax for that wet look.

4. Low ponytails/buns

This season, everything should look effortless yet chic. Low ponytails and messy buns at the nape of the neck is sexy yet sophisticated, and shows you mean no-nonsense. Perfect for that important meeting to wow everyone as you step in with your perfectly manicured hands and power suit!

5. Black elastic bands

If before, stylists were obsessed with having the elastic bands covered up with a piece of hair wrapped around it to camouflage the band – this year, it’s all about flaunting the black elastic band! We love this minimalist approach (because it saves us loads of time!) and it’s time the humble black band gets its day in the sun. For a little more glamour, use a band that has silver, metallic or pearl accents to it – but let’s still leave anything loud, colourful, and gaudy behind!

Dandruff is a pretty common problem for both men and women which has a tendency to cause sufferers to feel uncomfortable and self-conscious, but with the proper treatment and care, it’s completely manageable!

Kiehl’s has developed a treatment which marries its expertise in both skin and hair care through a scalp treatment duo which provides an effective and efficient solution for promoting a healthy scalp and clean, clarified hair.

Step 2: Kiehl’s Scalp Purifying Dandruff Shampoo (250ml/RM75) with a clinically-proven active, provides a deep, yet gentle cleanse for hair and scalp to help prevent the recurrence of symptoms associated with dandruff.  Fortified with a naturally-derived blend of Essential Oils – Rosemary Leaf and Marjoram Oil plus hydrating Aloe, this non-stripping shampoo leaves hair and scalp refreshed, invigorated and healthy-looking.

Having a ‘Me’ Day: 3 Ways to Pamper Yourself for Extended Good Times

Category : Beauty , Beauty Buzz , Hair

Sometimes, us ladies just need to take a break from our everyday roles as mother/daughter/wife/employee/employer/fill-in-the-blank and just have a ‘Me’ day by pampering ourselves silly, so we can go back to feeling on top of the world; fabulous and able to share those good vibes with our loved ones!

Recently, Sunsilk asked women what they felt was their perfect day by building an itinerary of activities on Facebook, and the female legion responded with various combinations of activities which poured in. However, the most votes went to:

1. A relaxing, pampering hair spa session for soft and smooth tresses

2. A shopping spree

3. A high-tea session with friends at a fancy cafe

VenusBuzz recently followed 50 lucky ladies who got to then experience this perfect day out thanks to Sunsilk as we headed out to a popular shopping mall to carry out the three activities above!

It started off with us feeling a tiny bit grouchy, as we had to be up early on a weekend for work and had to put our other plans on hold. But, we went with an open mindt, and seeing how happy and excited the women who were selected for this outing were to share this day with their friend immediately made us feel good.

Next, we were taken to one of the hair salons in the mall to get our relaxing hair spa pampering session which included using the Sunsilk Co-Creations line-up of Shampoo, Intensive Treatment Mask, and Nourishing Spray. The Nourishing Soft & Smooth variant combats dry hair while the Smooth & Manageable variant fights unmanageable hair.

We then got our tresses blown into soft curls, which instantly let us feel glamourous and had us walking with a bounce in our step!

It’s amazing how having smooth, light, and untangled hair could immediately change our mood and we started making plans to meet up with people later that day (it would be an absolute waste not to see anyone when you have such glorious hair!). The best part is that you don’t even have to go to a salon if you don’t want to blow your budget; the Sunsilk Co-Creations line is so accessible, you can even do it at home on your own and have an extended good time through long-lasting, 25-hour hair that’s soft, smooth and manageable

With fabulous hair in check, we were now ready to do some serious retail therapy. We were given vouchers and told we could spend it on anything at Tangs departmental store – can you say, “Best. Day. Ever!”

Instead of getting something sensible, we decided to go all out and get something we would never even consider getting due to the price tag! Ten minutes later, we walked out of Tangs with a beautiful Mugler necklace and handbag; beaming from head to toe!

The icing on the cake came after as we were treated to a spectacular high-tea (as you can imagine, we were pretty famished after such an exciting morning) at Delicious cafe which just extended the good times further.

We left feeling on such a high, noticeably more confident and just overall more positive and happy to be around people. Now we know what works, you can bet we’ll be giving ourselves our own hair spa treatment every weekend!

Going Grey: Taking Care of Aging & Thinning Hair

Category : Beauty , Hair , Love & Sex

Dedicated to women aged 30 and above who desire to make the most of their aging hair.

Grey is a sign of maturity but truth be told, no one wants for their hair to age. My mum had this voluminous, long tresses that was a big part of her appeal in her 20s. Fast forward to her late 30s, when she was forced to chop it all into a bob because the hair fall and thinning were just overwhelming.

As we grow older, our hair follicles slow down in producing new hair – later causing the bald spots on the head. The little hair that is being produced also decreased in diameter; such is known as ‘fine hair’. The used-to-be black or dark hair slowly turns grey and loses its natural shine – making the overall hair condition to look dull.

Maintain your calm, because it is not the end of the world (granny hair is now a thing among younger women!). Just like any other phase in life, a few adjustments in the beauty regime is all we need.

1. Avoid harsh chemicals

We are so used to torturing our hair with colouring chemicals and under extreme heat that our first reaction after our hair greys is ‘let’s colour this so strong the grey won’t dare to show up!’. That is a common misconception among aging women, because old hair is even more prone towards heat and harsh chemicals. Opt to use cooling hair dryer and semi-permanent colouring that would do less damage than the permanent one.

2. Get frequent hair cuts

Aging hair is brittle, thus harder to kept neat and presentable. Treat the trip to your hairdresser as a regular ‘checkup’ whereby you get regular trims and suitable haircut for your face shape. More importantly than your hair length, what you need to let go is the multiple layers you used to sport. Lesser layers that compliment your face will give the illusion of thicker hair. Avoid hair styles that ‘pull’ the hair, especially tight curls, because they can cause even more hair falls.

Do indulge in the hair treatments your hairdresser recommend you to help your hair shine, and feel better every time you step out of the salon.

3. Brush with care

Use soft-brittle comb to brush your hair, and do it gently. Wet hair is especially prone to fall and breakage, so do brush even more gently after a hair wash. When a part is tangled, try not to pull harshly but slowly untangle the knot.

4. Chemicals to make hair thicker and healthier: minoxidil and procyanidin

These are the ingredients in hair care products you should be looking for. While minoxidin is believed to increase hair growth, procyanidin which is found in grape seeds and apple skin help produce hair with a thicker diameter – meaning hair would be stronger, less brittle and more resistant to outside damage.

5. Exercise regularly & eat for your beautiful hair

Aerobic exercises actually promote more active follicles and healthier hair, so don’t stop moving no matter what age you are at. Take a look at our exercise guide for women over 40, and make sure physical exercise is in your daily schedule (even walking in the garden counts!). Physical exercise helps you keep a healthy mind, body and now…healthy hair!

Your diet does make a difference too, especially in moisturising your hair from the inside. Salmon is packed with Omega-3 goodness, and it could also be replaced by Omega-3 vitamin if you don’t consume it as often. Other foods for your beautiful hair include dark green vegetables, soy beans and poultry products. Read our feature on guide to beautiful hair diet, here.

Last but not least, embrace your grey by neither over-caring for it or neglecting it. Accept your physical changes and make adjustments necessary to make the most of your current condition. If you’ve been longing for that pixie cut for over 30 years, why not do it now?

6 Ways to Get Rid of Dry/Sensitive/Flaky Scalp Problems

Category : Beauty , Hair , VenusMaxisFeed

Sensitive scalps are the bane of anyone’s existence.

You know the feeling; the incessant scratching, the white flakes on your black top – all of this could be due to a number of causes such as pollen allergies, product buildup, stress, bacterial infection or skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema.

While most people just feel resigned to the fact that this is a condition they’re stuck with – it needn’t be the case! Here are some things you can do to improve and alleviate the symptoms and remember, every little step helps in the long run!

Food: Eat lots of walnuts, olive oil, asparagus, cheese, roast beef and even dark chocolate to ease your scalp discomfort. Opt for foods that have vitamin B, vitamin E, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids in your diet.

Stress: We all know that all bad things that happen to the body is a side-effect of stress, so the only way to reduce our flare ups is to take control of your stress levels. Ensure you have enough sleep, take time to smell the roses, do 10-minutes of yoga in the morning, or take a walk whenever you feel stress creeping in. And no, smoking is not the answer!

Hairstyle: If you’re used to tying your hair in a tight ponytail, perhaps loosen it up a little to let your scalp breathe. If you’re used to wearing the hijab or keeping your hair under a cap (especially when your hair is still damp), it’s best to blow dry it and ensure it’s completely dry before your keep it covered. It really doesn’t help that our humid weather only exarcebates this problem.

Products: Perhaps it’s time to change your shampoo routine if the current one isn’t helping your problem. Use one that’s sulfate-free, or with silk and wheat proteins. Avoid products which contain menthol or drying alcohols as this just dries out the scalp further.

Shampoo: Excessive products or allergens from the environment, sweat and oil buildup have a tendency of clogging up your pores and cause scalp sensitivity so it is important to ensure you shampoo frequently to get rid of all those external factors, and properly by massaging your scalp (not just a quick lather and rinse!).

Medication: If all of the above fail, then you might have an infection or a skin condition (which doesn’t make you weird or abnormal, these things happen!) like psoriasis or eczema. If this is the case, visit your dermatologist and they will be able to recommend you something that’s appropriate for your skin type.

While it may take awhile for the tips and tricks mentioned above to work, it’s best to start wearing white or grey clothes or one with designs on it to make your dry scalp problem a little less obvious, rather than solid dark colours. Good luck and have faith it will get better
