NailSnaps: Turn Your Pictures into Nail Art

Forget acryllic paints and tiny brushes (let’s not forget, that uglier right hand nail art)..soon, we might all get personalised manicures at the press of a button.

What if we told you that there’s an app being developed now that will enable you to print out your favourite photographs into customised nail art stickers that you can apply within mere minutes – minus the drying time!

Called NailSnaps, it combines digital creativity and beauty into next level self-expression with limitless possibilities! Wouldn’t it be great to look at your digits and see your favourite pet’s face?

Or all your favourite desserts and latte art? How about pictures from that one time you were in vacation in Japan? What about reliving your wedding day and having your lace dress on your nails?

We think this would make great party favours and gift ideas as well!

    So, how does it work?

    1. DESIGN. The free NailSnaps mobile app lets you design exactly how you want your photo or image to appear on your nails. Create an image that spans across your nails, or pick and choose different parts of an image for each finger.

    2. PRINT. Once you’ve got a design you love, they print and ship your high-quality nail polish stickers right to your door from the manufacturing facility in Los Angeles.

    3. ROCK. Easily apply NailSnaps custom nail polish stickers yourself in minutes, with no dry time, no heat, and no waiting. Rock your NailSnaps. Your one-of-a-kind nail polish stickers will last about a week.

While this is still a Kickstarter project, we’d love to see it turn into reality due to the endless possibilities. We think this is one app that totally nailed it. Ba-dum-tss.

Show your support for this app by backing it on Kickstarter or follow them on Instagram and Twitter.

Future Beauty: 3D Printed ‘Nail Jewellery’ Manicure

Why spend time painstakingly painting on your own manicure, when you can get an awesome 3D design printed?

With 3D printing paving the way for fashion, it’s only natural that this piece of technology would find its way to the world of beauty – and no we’re not talking about slapping some 3D lipstick on.

Think 3D-printed fingernails for futuristic finger candy in bright colours and interesting shapes by New York brand The Laser Girls.

Using dyed nylon, digital artists Sarah C. Awad and Dhemerae Ford feature three-dimensional geometric patterns on the surface of these synthetic nails which are designed to be “nail jewellery”.

They’ve even got a manicure + ring combination which could very well be the future in terms of marrying both fashion and beauty together as one pretty baby!

Now they don’t come cheap, the cheapest start at USD30 (approximately RM100) for a set of 10 and are not meant to be used for extended wear (maximum 3 to 5 days).

While they don’t mention if it’s reusable, we reckon these are meant to be used like false lashes with the option to apply it using nail glue or thin mounting tape for special occasions.

Follow The Laser Girls on Instagram for more updates, and check out the online store to purchase.

How To Remove Nail Polish Naturally

For days when you run out of nail polish remover or when you decide to forego the harsh chemicals in one, this is an alternative you can try.

Commercial brands of nail polish removers often contain acetone and other dangerous chemicals. This can be too harsh on delicate nails and dangerous when inhaled.

Hence, it is better to remove nail polish naturally to reduce your chemical exposure. Try these simple alternatives the next time you want to go back to bare:

    Hot Water

The most natural way to remove polish is to soften it with hot water.

How-to: Heat a bowl of water in a microwave or on the stove. Test the temperature to be sure it’s at a level that you are able to tolerate. Then immerse your hands in the bowl of hot water soaking for around 15 minutes. After the polish softens, gently scrape it off.

    Vinegar & Citrus Juice

This is a natural remover that is gentle on fragile nails. Vinegar and citrus have acidic substances that can break down nail polish and make it easier to be wiped off.

How-to: Squeeze the juice from various citric fruits like lemon or lime into a bowl and mix with a small amount of vinegar. Put a cotton ball in the mixture and saturate your fingernails. This process may take a bit longer to remove the polish fully.

    Hand Sanitiser

The content of a hand sanitiser can be used to effectively take off the polish.

How-to: Put a couple of drops of hand sanitiser onto a clean, dry cloth and wipe down the nails until all of the nail polish is removed. You may require more than one application to remove all of the polish.

    MANICyours: Ciate Feathered Manicure

The leaders of innovative nail textures are back, and it’s flying off the charts with ingenuity

I was in Singapore recently for the Bolshoi Ballet performance of Swan Lake and decided we needed something equally as elegant and classy for a manicure. Ciate’s Feathered Manicure proved to be the perfect choice because it was subtle, yet was interesting enough to hold on its own that we couldn’t help but stare at it at every chance we got – who needs glitters and sparkles (well, sometimes!).

These come in three different kits (L-R) Ruffle My Feathers, All A Flutter, and What A Hoot. We review Ruffle My Feathers with a lilac mini paint pot in Chinchilla and brown feathers.

What You’ll Get in Every Kit:

0.17 oz Speed Coat Pro, 0.17 Mini Paint Pot, Nail scissors, 2 x Nail file block, 40 x feathers in various sizes (although I had 42 in mine) and a booklet for instructions.

    How To:

Step 1: Apply two coats of your Mini Paint Pot colour and allow to dry completely.

Step 2: Apply a generous amount of Speed Coat on one nail.

Step 3: Immediately apply the tip of the feather facing your cuticle on top of your nail with the still-wet Speed Coat. Leave some space at the cuticle so you still see the colour of the base nail polish.

Step 4: Using the nail scissors provided, snip off the excess feather. Be careful because it’s quite sharp.

Step 5: Gently apply the Speed Coat on top of the feather to secure it down. Follow the grain of the feather to avoid it going out of shape.

Step 6: Once the top coat is completely dry, use the nail file block to smoothen the edges from the excess feather

It’s slightly challenging to do this (especially on your non-primary hand), and also it felt like we were wasting a lot of precious feathers that we tried to recycle one feather for two nails. if you look closely, the ring finger was a result of using the lower part of the feather – hence, why the pattern is more obvious.

It can work, but do take note that the spine of the feather is a little more thicker here which makes it more difficult to follow the curve of your nail. So it’s possible, but really look at the thickness of the spine – if the feather is thick enough then maybe you might be able to get away with only using the feather bits.

All in all, it’s definitely an interesting look and we reckon the colourful kit All A Flutter will appeal to those who like bright eye-catching nails. At a mere RM82, it’s definitely worth checking out at Sephora Malaysia.

MANICyours: Mariah Carey Holiday Collection by OPI

Mariah’s on a roll! She’s just launched 18 more nail lacquers with OPI for a Limited Edition Holiday Collection!

While her initial Studio and Stage collections were more ‘girly’ shades of purple, pink and blues, Mariah’s latest Holiday collection features deeper, rich colours to express the warmth of Christmas and New Years.

This seasonal promotion includes an assortment of red, burgundy, maroon and chocolate brown hues, along with glitter-packed gold, bronze and pearl shades and still features the Liquid Sand textures ranging from icy blue to frosted pink and sparkling graphite. Each of the Liquid Sand shades showcases OPI’s groundbreaking technology for a textured, matte finish infused with reflective sparkle.

With 18 shades, there’s a perfect hue for every occasion: The 12 crème and glitter lacquers include classic reds, champagne gold, and warm burgundies, while the six Liquid Sand shades should be worn without top coat for a matte finish in icy, frosted colors. To get you in the mood, here’s Mariah in her Christmas element (we certainly listened to it to get us in the mood for this post)!

OK, so back to the Mariah Carey Holiday collection! The nail lacquers include the following :

My Favorite Ornament Make this champagne glitter your new personal favorite.

All I Want for Christmas (is OPI) This marvelous maroon is present-ly my top choice.

Cute Little Vixen This deep red violet has foxy written all over it.

Underneath the Mistletoe Is my kiss as spicy-sweet as this candy-apple red?

In My Santa Suit This generously pigmented red is worth staying on the “nice” list.

Visions of Love I see this rich burgundy in my immediate future.

Warm Me Up This spiced coffee hits all the cold spots.

Wonderous Star This gold-flecked shimmer has heavenly shine.

All Sparkly and Gold What more can we say…the name says it all.

Sleigh Ride for Two There’s only room left for this dark hot chocolate.

Ski Slope Sweetie This golden pearl is everybunny’s favorite.

I Snow You Love Me Just like I snow you love this disco light confetti.

    LIQUID SAND SHADES

Silent Stars Go By This blush of textured pink has parades of sparkle.

Baby Please Come Home Can’t wait to see you…in this textured and sparkling lilac.

Make Him Mine But make this textured glistening rose mine first!

It’s Frosty Outside This frosted silver is so icy it’s hot.

Emotions This dramatic sparkling coal has got me feeling fine.

Kiss Me at Midnight It’s time to fall in love with this frosted ice blue.

We reviewed the Four Mini Holiday Hits which includes mini sizes of Visions of Love, Warm Me Up, Wonderous Star, and All Sparkly and Gold.

This collection is great because you can mix and match the glitters with the crèmes for two different looks. The first is pairing Visions of Love which is an opaque rich burgundy with two coats of All Sparkly and Gold (think M.A.C.’s Antique Gold pigment in fine-glitter form) on your feature nails.

For the second look, Warm Me Up which is a play on a nice cup of coffee on a cold Winter’s day is slightly less opaque than Visions of Love but two coats will suffice. Add another two coats of Wonderous Star (fine silver glitter with a smattering of small black circular glitter) on your feature nails. This was so bling (in typical Mariah fashion) that we even had difficulty photographing it!

We love both combos and if you’re all about the bling, opt for painting all your nails with two coats of both glitter nail lacquers, we just think the contrast works better (and also makes for easier cleaning of nails)!

All products in the Mariah Carey Collection by OPI contain no DBP, Toluene, or Formaldehyde, and feature OPI’s exclusive ProWide Brush for the ultimate in application. This collection is now available at Colour Culture (OPI Nail Bar), OPI Kiosk and leading nail, beauty, hair salons & spa centers throughout Malaysia. Individual bottles are priced at RM63 each or RM83 for the Four Mini Holiday Hits.

MANICyours: Nails Inc. Foil and Sephora Nail Designer 3D Effect

If you’re all for shiny manicures but dislike chunky glitter pieces, then this look might be for you.

For this week’s MANICyours segment, let us introduce you to the Kings Road (Foil effect) nail polish by Nails Inc. and Sephora’s Nail Designer 3D Effect micro glitter pot.

Inspired by the metallic accents donned on various high-fashion Autumn/Winter 2013 catwalks (e.g. Prada, Marc Jacobs, Burberry), the Foil effect polish will help you nail the hottest trend of the season. To sparkle things even more, we we decided to see how Sephora’s Nail Designer 3D effect fared as a finishing touch.

Application for the nail polish was a cinch as the formula was smooth and thick – it was seriously like spreading flowing, liquefied foil onto our nails. For this swatch, each nail was effortlessly covered and opaque with two coats, but we reckon that one coat would yield almost similar results.

The ring fingers were finished off with Sephora’s Nail Designer 3D effect, which is basically micro-sized glitter that’s almost akin to shimmer. To achieve the look, simply dip your finger into the pot while the nail polish is still wet and shake away the excess.

The results were dazzling to say the least; the metallic shine was simply amazing! The Nails Inc.’s Foil effect in Kings Road gave our nails a beautiful rose gold foil shine that would catch the eye of those around you. One would be able to capture the metallic trend well with the Foil effect nail polish.

What we adored most was the fact that this chic yet neutral colour would match almost any other skin tone beautifully, and that the formula was super easy to apply. Perfect for days you don’t want to crack your head on designs but would still love to give your nails a glam look.

The micro-sized glitter gave the nails an interesting textured finishing and paired up nicely with the Kings Road nail polish. A word of warning though – be prepared to have your surroundings glitter-fied. One should understand that this sort of glitter application technically takes up some time and a high tolerance of dispersed glitter.

All in all, this nail polish and glitter combination would make for a great look to parties or a girls night out. It’s chic, glam and eye-catching. To those that are afraid of being too over the top, simply opt for the nail polish; you can put on the glitter a few hours before a party or glamorous event

Get both the Nails Inc. in King Foil and Sephora Nail Designer 3D in Sephora outlets nationwide.
